It's hard to know if the price with the tariff is $70 because the tariffs tend to change from day to day. You order something on Monday and when it's sent on Tuesday the tariff could be different. Also it's a tax added by the receiving country, it's very difficult to track and apply those.

This is honestly a big problem with surveillance. Loud voices are often business driven, trying to impose themselves on technical areas. Most often with unknown gains in mass surveillance.

You may want not to bring people to a thread where you are pro digital surveillance while not understanding e2ee or banking data access laws. That is even without mentioning describing yourself as digital policy strategist.

The problem with digital speech activists’ one sided framing of this debate is that they don’t acknowledge that digital architecture has shifted what is possible. End-to-end encryption makes it impossible for law enforcement to do targeted surveillance, just as lack of it makes filtering trivial.

With a court order police can capture devices and if done correctly have access to private keys. It's just not automated and applied to every citizen by default. There's assumption not everyone is a criminal that requires constant surveillance.

I can make my website into e2ee messaging app for people I trust in less than one hour with it still working as a website and all traffic still looking like normal web traffic. It will not be traceable by any spying regulation, neither chat control or any protecteu.

TLS used in transit with the private keys used to decrypt the content sent by 2 participants is exactly the definition implementation of e2ee. If you differentiate this from "messaging-app sense" you are preventing criminals from encrypting messages. You only enable spying on general population.

That's not true too. Most entities that handle personally identifiable information (PII) encrypt stored data. PSD2 or NIS2 directive EU 2022/2555 requires encrypting stored data too. You don't "e2e" encrypt stored data, that concept only applies to transfer.

It is. All communication to the bank is e2ee. Teaching people how to recognize if they're on the correct bank site that is using their certificate is a part of preventing theft with a fake site.

Targeted surveillance can be done by planting bugs, having field agents, using drone footage (or even traffic cameras). You don’t need to be able to automate surveilling entire population at once to do the targeted surveillance.
