Last year I ended my project about Roman stylus tablets, which was funded by the @gerda-henkel-stiftung.de, early – for my dream job. But before I did, we filmed a series of short videos about the project, and the first episode is now live. (English Version available) ⬇️⬇️⬇️

I’m thrilled to share some exciting news: Today I started my new position as Curator of Roman Archaeology at the State Collection of Lower Austria | @unikrems.bsky.social – I look forward to the journey ahead and to contributing to the rich archaeological #heritage of #Carnuntum and beyond!
Cast-iron pillar with an elaborately styled capital, originally part of the structural system of the former tobacco factory in Hainburg, now integrated into the museum depot of the State Collections of Lower Austria (Landessammlungen Niederösterreich) at the Kulturfabrik Hainburg. The ornamental column exemplifies late 19th-century industrial architecture, blending functionality with classical design elements.

New #ARCHE Data Collection online!
The IUENNA collection is a comprehensive set of digital archaeological data describing sites Globasnitz, Hemmaberg, Jaunstein, Jauntal and St Stefan. The project was carried out by @oeai.bsky.social and kaernten.museum.

Text on Image: The IUENNA collection aims to provide an exemplary model study and a sustainable long-term archive of archaeological data from one of the most critical Late Antique landscapes in the Southeast Alpine region. It includes a diverse array of digital and digitized resources focused on archaeological research and documentation in Jauntal. The data stems from archaeology, geophysics, born-digital data, documentary photography, environmental archaeology, restoration, and architectural research. It has been collected over decades and consists of text, tables, databases, raster datasets, vector datasets, and 3D data.
Raster and vector data are particularly relevant to photography, graphics, and geoinformation fields, representing topographic surfaces, spatial geometries, and including qualitative and quantitative attributes.

Alt Text:
A conceptual workflow diagram illustrating the methodology used in the paper “I Walk an Ancient Road: A Straightforward Methodology for Analyzing Intra- and Inter-Regional Connectivity Systems along Roman Frontier Zones (c. 1st–5th century AD)”. The image presents a series of interconnected maps and analytical steps for reconstructing ancient road networks in Roman hinterlands.

The workflow begins with a find register showing archaeological site distributions, followed by the identification of site clusters and defining an area of interest. Environmental factors such as rivers, slope, and flood zones are integrated into a friction surface to model movement costs. This is followed by least-cost paths (LCPs), which trace the most efficient routes between sites, further refined through path density analysis. Visibility analysis (viewsheds) is applied to examine intervisibility between key locations. The final step involves reconstructing the connectivity system using spatial social network analysis (SSNA), least-cost modeling, and ground-truthing to validate results.

The study employs GIS-based methods to analyze Roman road networks in frontier zones, particularly in Northern Noricum (modern Austria). It explores military and civilian mobility, emphasizing how infrastructure shaped regional interactions. The image visually represents the integration of spatial analysis, computational modeling, and archaeological interpretation in the research.
