I love it. Even as "Mrs. Gracedew" . . . Miss Eartha Kitt is still Miss Eartha Kitt. 💋

Interviewed for January's 1971 EVENING POST about THE HIGH BID and career to date, stating Kitt ignores critics, Kitt responded: "I can't afford to be nervous about their reactions. I don't care about critics only about my public, and they have been absolutely marvellous. I thank them very much."

“[...]Here in England no one has even mentioned the fact that here's a black woman playing a Henry James heroine. I could be black, white, pink or green and I get the feeling no one would care. In America it would be a big issue. I'm sure of that.”

I have watched Betty Compson in films before, but . . . to watch so many—at times in different films back-to-back—made her stand out to me and appreciate her all the more.

If you have yet to seek out her work, I encourage all film fans to do so.

Spent most of my summer (re)watching silent films in a "Roaring '20s steps out with Pre-Code" vibe (letterboxd.com/dominiquerev...) with no regrets—and while I (re)watched a lot of Louise Brooks, Alice White, and Clara Bow, the one actress who stood out for me was Betty Compson.

"You play the role in front of the camera but you have to know who you are afterwards. Inner strength is the most important."

Her filmography is so varied and rich.

Passings as these seem so personal. Claudia Cardinale wasn't just a pretty face onscreen, in front of the camera,. Her features AND talent had an unmistakable natural chemistry with the camera.

Another presence you never wanted to go.
