Since child learning bout '30s Germany/Europe, looked at literally every new person with inbuilt q - became automatically implied, no need to even internal-monologue-speak it:
If fascism returns, would this person wanna be a gauleiter?
And now we're finding out.

In normal usage of cynical, fair enough. I don't feel it though. I appreciate humans in our absurd varieties.
In public political discourse, in workplace, that layer of human concerns/intentions related to 'how do I look to others?', 'am *I* doing well here?' is pretty much never acknowledged.

It's only self-sabotage if any interfere with their intended project. I really don't feel any bitterness, any animus at all, when I say that all the future / current Labour MPs I ever met seemed to have one over-riding project - that of personal ambition to be a MP, to be an important person.

Main weakness I feel of this analysis is it overstates political differences between Starmer and Johnson. Or between Mandelson/Campbell and Gibb.
Counter-factual situ - imagine if Corbyn had been PM for a bit and put e.g. @john-mcevoy.bsky.social on BBC board. Think he’d still be there?
