On this last day of 2024, I’m focusing on the good in the world and the promise that hope brings. I’m taking comfort from Howard Zinn and his encouragement. Happy New Year!

My latest commentary, in @slj.com with @tasslyn.bsky.social on the Mahmoud v Taylor decision. These wonderful books -- and their authors -- deserved better.

I was a fast reader and good test-taker. More than once, a teacher shamed me in front of my classmates for finishing a test too fast. This only happened on the first tests in their classes. After grading my work, they never said a word about it again.

Hyun Sook and I can't be at @amlibraryassoc.bsky.social annual, but we did draw our last appearance on stage at a @libcomix.bsky.social panel with @jerrycraft.bsky.social into an upcoming book!

What a wonderful surprise to wake up to. @ryanestrada.com made this lovely cartoon with Hyun Sook and him at ALA with cameos by me, @monibarre.bsky.social @noethematt.bsky.social and others!

Sad to learn that Wonderopolis is closing at the end of July. What an incredible resource! I wonder if government funding cuts are the reason...https://familieslearning.org/blog/ncfls-digital-learning-platform-wonderopolis-to-close/

I’m mentoring a few job-seekers & noticing a generational divide in expectations. I’m curious, if you reach the interview stage of a job search, do you expect to be notified when the position has been filled? Do you follow up? Do you just assume after a period of time that you weren’t hired?

It’s been more than 5 years since my previous fiction picture book was published (FIRE TRUCK VS. DRAGON, the week the pandemic officially began 😑), so it feels great to at last be within 2 months of the 7/15 publication day for WE MATCH!

And the plagiarism and theft of intellectual property is just fine with you. Got it!

Imagine every author with books in your school library came to the next faculty meeting and you had to explain why stealing their work to train LLMs is OK at your school. What would you say? I’m open to reasonable arguments. I see folks skirting this issue, so I’m asking outright.

I’m in Washington DC tonight for meetings at the Library of Congress tomorrow. We’ve all just learned that Dr. Carla Hayden was fired via email. I’m honored to have met Dr. Hayden and learned from her. This is horrible news.
