can you dig it
That’s incredible — it just never occurred to me how much of an influence ZZ were on VH. How about this, on “Heard it on the X” [originally from 1975] — so obviously part of that musical lineage:

You can really hear the ZZ Top influence on Van Halen here — “Just Got Paid” from 1972’s Rio Grande Mud btw — in that swing-shuffle drum line. That 80s hard rock sound is often attributed to Van Halen bridging the gap to Led Zeppelin & Cream but the “Americana” of it all is quintessentially ZZ Top.

That’s from the photo pit too so clearly they knew they were being filmed

Death. “In Human Form.” July 31, 1993. One Step Beyond club, Santa Clara CA. Footage like this is why I think of old school bootleggers as music historians. This is front stage.

The Fog. 1980. Dir: John Carpenter. Apparently in the original cut, Blake takes the cross and leaves — and test audiences hated it, thought it was anti climactic — so they restaged & reshot this new finale, and for me it’s one of Carpenter’s best endings. Even if he himself disagrees.

Ah yeah, speculation but things are clearly in play — I’m not actually sure if the ice Slot’s standing on could be any thinner because, sadly, this isn’t conjecture. There’s not a chance FSG will allow this to continue.

I remember when Eternal Idol came out and this riff HIT — they felt like an 80s heavy metal band now. They even leaned into the head-to-toe black leather. Here’s the behind the scenes promo reel.

If there was ever a song which drops you into a midnight jungle and drags you in by your feet, this is it.

Their formula of ‘intro > main riff’ transition — where the other 3 stop to give James “space” to launch the main riff — is also how he could set the tempo with just his isolated guitar. The speed & precision here is inhuman. In this moment, the other 3 are thinking ‘holy fck’ — especially Lars
November 27, 2025 at 10:22 PM
They say the roots of thrash metal are NWOBHM + punk — but really the punk aspect is attitude, because the *musicianship* of thrash needs precision. Hetfield is ‘simply’ chugging an open E here — the other 3 are giving the song its dynamic — but he’s the anchor. Lars didn’t set the tempo, James did.

They played “War Pigs” too but the footage cuts off in the intro — a few other tid bits: the bootleg audio has been available but not the video; Geezer bought that bass off Glenn Hughes; Walker playing the tambourine. Almost 50 yrs old now. A real gem.

Black Sabbath. “Junior’s Eyes.” 1977. BBC TV. *SUPER RARE* recently unearthed footage [the last 24 hrs] of Dave Walker fronting the band in that brief window Ozzy quit before coming back to record NSD with his own vocal arrangements. Iommi, Geezer, Ward & Walker.

The fact this got 1.3K likes and 50 reposts is telling when film snobs can’t comprehend cult cinema — because let me tell ya, sure, while it’s not his best, The Running Man is fcking Lawrence of Arabia in the world of action B-movies 😂
