Thanks Doug! It feels weird that one of the reasons I got put off academia was the amount of time spent on grant proposals; I’ve now done many more for charity than I did in my v short academic spell, but it’s also been more fun this way.

I watched a figure emerge from the smoking arcing rubble and realised it was myself - somehow in the future I would solve the mysteries of time travel and return to deliver an urgent message. I stared into my own wild, dying eyes as the words sank in:

To some extent yes, but on the other hand the "I insist that you show all your working from first principles" style of annoying argument was very much around on usenet in the 90s and I imagine well before; modern social media made it much more awful.

No, you shouldn’t. “Cause of outage: wanted to play NMS” is 100% valid and reasonable and anyone who disagrees can pony up to buy you a separate server. It’s not your job to shield people from the fact you’re hosting a public service on your own kit.

A mathematical trick that lets you tell what’s going on inside something by only looking at its exterior surface, or vice versa. Like adding up the number of people who’ve gone into the ticket gates and taking away the number emerging, to find how many people are on the tube right now.
