It's a weird #TransDayofVisibility for me because I feel all too visible all too much of the time. If a stranger walked up & asked, "Hey, are u trans?" my urge would be to palm my pepper spray & search for a convenient shrubbery to duck behind. Like, can we get a #TransDayofINvisibility up in here?

I'll add that "not letting them terrorize you" isn't about shutting down fear or anxiety. It's about allowing your feelings the space they need & mindfully deciding what actions to take.

Build up capacity to resist 5) Remember they are like abusive parents: they only see us as extensions of them. They have no clue how powerful joy and community and self-expression can be. We can use this to our advantage — we can be the strong-willed child they never saw coming. Spending time connecting to your true self is not selfish in these times — it’s intricately connected to a resistance movement that is tied to honoring our bodies, our communities, and to the land. We have to build capacity to resist by being exactly who we are!

Beautiful insight about how kids learn consent from what they watch their parents do.
theconceledweapon I see a lot of posts saying "teach boys about consent". While that is true, a lot of parents will do that and fail to see how their own actions are the problem. If you've spanked him, he's less likely to understand consent. If you've forced him to sit on Santa's lap, he's less likely to understand consent. If you've forced him to give hugs and kisses to family members, he's less likely to understand consent. If you've grabbed him in order to force him to sit still, he's less likely to understand consent. If you've labeled him as "too sensitive" for not wanting to be touched, he's less likely to understand consent. If you've assumed he's okay with something because he technically allowed it even though he felt pressured, he's less likely to understand consent. If you're only going to criticize his actions but not your own, it won't work. doberbutts I am a firm believer that it's not just what he experiences in his life, but what he witnesses too. Okay so you don't do any of those to him but you do those things to his sisters? His cousins? His mom? He is learning consent is for him but not for women. One of my sisters has young children, both of whom are some flavor of neurodivergent. She is too, and as a result she often lost patience quickly with some of their quirks. The biggest offender is that her kids are extremely wary around anyone they deem to be a stranger, making social connection very difficult for all participants. When I first met her daughter, she was 3 or 4, and was extremely reluctant to come and meet me. My sister began to shame and push and pull her towards me and I stopped her. I said "don't force her, don't teach her that she has to let men she doesn't know touch her, she doesn't need to hug me." My sister froze in place, processed it for a moment, and let her daughter go. She went back to hiding behind mom. We continued our conversation and her son slowly approached me, hugged me, and climbed up onto the chair I was in to sit beside me and partially in my lap. After a few minutes, her daughter joined him. She didn't hug me, but she came over to touch and talk to me. My sister was speechless. Her kids DON'T do that. I've heard many complaints from many family members about how antisocial they are. All I did was stick up for their right to offer or withdraw consent—and really just her daughter’s, as her son had met me pre-covid and had already gotten over the hurdle at 2 years old, but her daughter was born during covid and thus it made her severe distrust of strangers even worse.

How to function effectively under the barrage of fascist actions:
1. Set boundaries
2. Use aggregators & experts
3. Remember: Feeling overwhelmed is their goal
4. Practice going slow
5. Build community
"As a sociologist, I need to tell you: Your overwhelm is the goal. 1/ The flood of 200+ executive orders in Trump's first days exemplifies Naomi Klein's "shock doctrine" - using chaos and crisis to push through radical changes while people are too disoriented to effectively resist. This isn't just politics as usual - it's a strategic exploitation of cognitive limits. 2/ Media theorist McLuhan predicted this: When humans face information overload, they become passive and disengaged. The rapid-fire executive orders create a cognitive bottleneck, making it nearly impossible for citizens and media to thoroughly analyze any single policy. 3/ Agenda-setting theory explains the strategy: When multiple major policies compete for attention simultaneously, it fragments public discourse. Traditional media can't keep up with the pace, leading to superficial coverage. The result? Weakened democratic oversight and reduced public engagement. What now? 1/ Set boundaries: Pick 2-3 key issues you deeply care about and focus your attention there. You can't track everything - that's by design. Impact comes from sustained focus, not scattered awareness. 2/ Use aggregators & experts: Find trusted analysts who do the heavy lifting of synthesis. Look for those explaining patterns, not just events. 3/ Remember: Feeling overwhelmed is the point. When you recognize this, you regain some power. Take breaks. Process. This is a marathon. 4/ Practice going slow: Wait 48hrs before reacting to new policies. The urgent clouds the important. Initial reporting often misses context 5/ Build community: Share the cognitive load. Different people track different issues. Network intelligence beats individual overload."

I was absolutely gobsmacked when I saw how much more accepting & upbeat media about trans people was ONE-HUNDRED YEARS AGO!!! It makes me grieve for the world we could have had, where our lives were never weaponized, & it makes me hope...because if it was possible then, maybe it will be again?
