US Drought Monitor class change map comparing conditions from October 7 to September 30. Drought conditions worsened across parts of the eastern U.S., Midwest and South. Pockets of improvement occurred in areas along the Ohio River into the Mississippi River and parts of the South. Drought conditions also improved in parts of the West, with areas of degradation in parts of Montana.

Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and New York noticed an uptick in wells running dry and urged water conservation amid rapid drought development in the Northeast this month.

While rains improved #drought conditions in isolated areas of the #Southeast, hot and dry weather prevailed over the region this week. Parts of Alabama and Georgia were hit particularly hard, with extreme drought emerging in Alabama.

The region’s recent flash drought has dried out peanut crops.
USDM Hot Topic October 2, 2025: the Southeast. This week, coverage of abnormal dryness or drought increased from 80.1% to 82.4% of the Southeast. Moderate drought or worse expanded from 32.02% to 37.52%. Severe drought or worse rose from 3.23% to 6.29%. Extreme drought appeared in Alabama this week, covering 0.23% of the region.

US Drought Monitor class change map comparing conditions from September 30 to September 23. Drought conditions improved along the Ohio River, with two-category improvements in West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky. Arkansas also saw one- and two-category improvements. Degradations with small areas of improvement occurred in the Southeast. Mixed conditions occurred across most other regions this week. Conditions improved in Puerto Rico and worsened in parts of Hawaii.

Earlier this month, NDMC research associate Paula Guastello presented the 2025 drought hotspots report at the ICID III conference in Brazil.

The goal of the conference was to bring more attention to drylands ahead of the upcoming COP 30.

The #Northeast has largely dried out over the summer. This week, extreme #drought worsened in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and West Virginia. Northern New England is experiencing poor crop and pasture conditions, low streamflows, depleted lakes and groundwater shortages.

USDM Hot Topic September 25, 2025: the Northeast. This week, coverage of abnormal dryness or drought increased from 81.11% to 92.81% of the Northeast. Moderate drought or worse expanded from 44.34% to 53.39%. Severe drought or worse rose from 22.53% to 26.01%. Extreme drought increased from 2.87% to 6.6%.
