Fairmount Park in Philadelphia has tremendous potential to be a world class park like it once was, but it's held back by far too many high speed roads and extremely deteriorated paths for people walking and biking.

Advocates seek to finally change that: whyy.org/articles/phi...
More than 1,000 Philadelphians demand a safer Fairmount Park
Following the death of a cyclist in the park, advocacy groups have partnered to call for enhanced safety measures there.

OMG this was my daily bike commute for 7 years, and it was always harrowing. I can't believe it!
Philadelphia CP Jay Young refuses to answer questions about why he is holding up a bike lane around City Hall that 1400 people signed a petition for (and which no one opposes). The arrogance is impressive. @dpearsonphl.bsky.social @meirrinde.bsky.social
Yeah, I'd be happy with either.

I know roundabouts are safer, but the ones in the park have ZERO thought for cyclists. Especially on Concourse they force me to merge into high speed traffic. Traffic definitely slows, but not that much.

There is exactly one way to rapidly cut pollution at scale, save money both at the govt and household level, and do it without federal help.

The best fastest thing to do on climate is to just make cities safer for walking and biking. That's it.

Every climate person should be working on this.

City Hall: Experts at King’s College London estimated that, from when the Mayor came into office in 2016, without additional action it would take 193 years for London to meet legal limits. It has been achieved in nine years.
man, i live around the corner. Imagine a team and league investing in their history AND an underserved community. That's a win-win.
symmetry wise, I like eliminating both of the drives in front of the museum rather than just one.
Honestly, I am good with either, but whatever remains open needs to be speed calmed and narrowed. The little roundabouts are cute and helpful a bit, but the rest of the road is still a death trap.
The Please Touch Museum parking lot is off Ave of the Republic, that's why I chose South Concourse.
Yep. PBA is demanding safe access for trail and sidewalk users as well.

But, closing down some of the roads to cars, would open them up to pedestrians and the like. South Concourse should be a giant walking path.
The park has seen plan after plan after plan....

It's easy

Close all unnecessary roads to car traffic immediately.

Somewhat important roads - put in gates and close outside of rush hour.

The remaining roads (Belmont, Mong, Kelly) road diet, speed bumps, and traffic calming.
The craziest part about this map is that Belmont Ave is literally the only green line in Fairmount Park.

The paths along Belmont are simply unpassable in spots, turn to dirt "desire" paths in others, and lead to intersections that are deadly.

The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission publishes a tool that shows where sidewalks are missing: www.dvrpc.org/webmaps/side...

Embarrassingly Philadelphia's worst area is Fairmount Park which has many roads without any sidewalks.

Fairmount Park is one Philadelphia's most underused assets, because it's not designed to be safe or usable as a park.

Since 2019 41 people have been killed by crashes in the park.

@bikeaction.org is trying to fix that.
