I feel like every scene I draw for Gilt is a real struggle and I am never satisfied, but then I put the character sprites over my WIPs and seeing them hanging out in that world makes me happy.

If you want to start making games, instead of trying to make your magnum opus on your first go, please do some game jams. Ludum Dare. Something short with a fixed time limit and specs you need to follow. Learn about developing under restrictions, how to get creative in them, how to scope smartly.

Shout out to Al Adamson for making Dracula vs. Frankenstein. Using the original lab equipment from the 1931 Frankenstein and got Lon Chaney Jr. to play... Not Dracula or Frankenstein or Frankenstein's monster. The axe wielding maniac Groton! Just bad enough to be bad, but not bad enough to be good.
