I eat, drink, watch, listen, and play. I also teach and study real estate finance at Clemson.
From time to time I get random flashbacks to very very cool moments in my life. Not exactly highlights, just things I'm very glad I got to experience. One of them was seeing Rigoletto at the Teatro Real in Madrid. It's been ten years now.

We canceled Thanksgiving because there was an accident right before our guests came in (some actually showed up, we just said we'd call with updates. Everyone's alive and we'll recover. The thing is... Now we have turkey🦃 for the rest of the year, it seems.

My go-to history podcast featured a TikTok commercial. @theresthistory.bsky.social I thought that was interesting.

Nothing keeps me more humble than a streak from sequential illnesses begun by daycare. Almost three weeks now of waking up with some ailment or two.

If only I lived in a town WITH movie theaters. But one can dream.
Random question. I vaguely remember something about copyright expiring after 100 years. Does that apply to film distribution as well? Can theaters show 1925 films for free now?

Don't know if it's a viable business but the idea of reliving the 1920s through film sounds so cool.

The washer and dryer finished at almost the same time and both started playing that tune they play but they were slightly off in timing and it sounded like a fugue...

It was beautiful

When we moved we did a decent job unpacking. Two small boxes of "miscellanea" were left half unpacked and we decided we'd deal with them later. They went to the basement, which became a guestroom. They're now in my home office. I might do something about these "coworkers"... Or not

This has been a terrible sports year for me but the Blue Jays might win the world series after 32 years...

Today I learned that Einstein's son, Hans Albert, lived in Greenville working as an engineer for USDA.

Apparently his house still stands.

Parents sometimes struggle looking for cool children's music when you can simply play The White Album.

For the nth time in my life, I find myself matching data sets by address in NYC.

On the bright side, today I learned the (very boring) reason behind "fractional" addresses.
The origins of New York City’s mysterious fractional addresses
For years, every walking tour I have led in Greenwich Village has taken visitors past 75½ Bedford St., the former of home of poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, long known as the “narrowest house” in New…

The summer I tried to (vibe)code in @julialang.org was also the summer I used @vscode.dev and, after about 8 years, I think I'm ready to leave Emacs. It was a good ride.

I just started with Suzuki's recordings of Bach cantatas. Will report back next year when I'm done.

Ok I got access to Perplexity's Comet. It's a browser so I'm not expecting (too) much, but we'll see...

Has anyone tried it?

There was A LOT going on in my life last October, so I was not paying a lot of attention to the news, I guess.
I vaguely recall that the physics Nobel Prize was given to AI, but I somehow didn't register until recently that the Chemistry Nobel was **also** given to AI research (and to Google!!!!).

My daughter loves rainy days because she gets to use her blue-and-yellow umbrella.

I, for myself, got to use some old, beaten-down, waterproof shoes that I don't really like and even hurt a bit.

Trying to solve an HPC (computer) issue and came across this in one of the @julialang.org fora:

Life, right?

Normally I ignore the suggested tracks because the sequence rarely makes sense (combining different genres, including instrumental, etc.). But sometimes (like now), everything's a mess so I just embrace the chaos. A random mid-opera recitativo right after an indy rock track, sure why not?
