@irishrainforest.bsky.social Dereliction is awful but 7 years ago my neighbour bought their house and never moved in and never rented it out. The whole urban back garden is now a forest and is home to hundreds of small birds. I’m constantly fighting it back but I love the noise the birds make.

Of all the posts in social media the ones I enjoy least are the “I swear, I’m going to post less” posts.
Shit or get off the pot.
I'm going to try to cut down on my social media. It's not good for me to be constantly bombarded with awful news I can do nothing about.

So apologies if I respond more slowly in future.

Trump doesn’t just need to implement his policies. He needs for people to believe they have gained more from his dictatorial leadership than they miss their lack of personal freedoms. Otherwise what he does can be reversed in 3.5 years. I’m not sure how he can do that.

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.
Wired is dropping paywalls for FOIA-based reporting. Others should follow
As the administration does its best to hide public records from the public, Wired magazine is stepping up to help stem the secrecy

The move from x to BSky seems to have slowed to a trickle. Maybe it's just me but I am seeing fewer interesting posts here than on X. I don't use social media to find community. I'm lucky. I have that. I use it to perk my interest. When someone says something that makes me think. BSky doesn't.

Reminder that for the US welfare state, the point is not to relieve poverty but to best manage the specter of destitution as a means of disciplining the bottom rung of labor. Countless academics point out it's cheaper to simply house people but for the super rich, in the long run, it absolutely isnt
In Georgia, a mom facing eviction reached out to DFCS for help. They offered her nothing. Soon the agency took her kids away because of "inadequate housing."

The state then paid *$6,200 a month* to house her kids in foster care.

One of the most important and infuriating stories I read this year:
When Families Need Housing, Georgia Will Pay for Foster Care Rather Than Provide Assistance
In more than 700 cases over five years, Georgia reported inadequate housing as the sole reason for taking a child into foster care, a WABE and ProPublica analysis found. Advocates say it would be chea...

125 kmph is not high speed but anyway. The first 3 hours should be a dance train then the last 5 should be for sleeping it off. 🎹 From Paris to Berlin in every disco I go in...
It’s over 1,000km from Berlin to Paris

There’s now a direct daytime train between them, that takes 8 hours and costs just €59. Leave at 10am, arrive 6pm.

And… it’s just 1% the carbon emissions of the equivalent flight

The weight of mammals bread for human consumption v wild mammals is 15 to 1. Yet we see this policy from one of the most environmentally thoughtful nations on the planet. Are we incapable of doing what is required to make our species get back into equilibrium and save the planet?
As we usher in 2025 + look to the future, we're reminded many states + countries are still stuck in the past.

Sweden's wolf hunt begins today + they'rey aiming to kill 5 packs (30 wolves). The govt announced in 2024 that they want to decrease the population from 375 to 170.

There's a tradition of film directors and studios congratulating each other for beating their box office records.

In 1977, when STAR WARS beat Jaws to become the highest-grossing movie ever, Steven Spielberg took out the below ad for George Lucas in Variety.

A few American eejits don't get joke and a ton of Irish people feel like they need to come to the rescue demanding that Bluesky be cleansed of all eejits because their online pal has to read some stupid replies. Would you all grow up. FFS.
Really hoped we’d left behind the people who think every tweet they see is directed at them and also have never encountered a joke before but here they are.
I was in Tesco last week and asked the child working if they sold buckfast and he asked me what it was. I said tonic wine and he said it might be beside the tonic water. What are they teaching in schools?

Tradition is never, of itself, enough of a reason to continue doing something.
If people find what you are doing repugnant and the only defence you have is that you have always done it. Sorry but you need to stop. Seems obvious but people get away with it all the time.

Is there a reason pop tarts aren't big in Ireland? I think I only ever had them twice. Dougal did mention them on Fr. Ted once. I mean they don't seem very healthy but we eat coco pops.
