Furthermore, except for the low-risk category, immigrants born in Southeast Asia had the highest prevalence of the remaining categories.

When we looked WITHIN various immigrant groups, we found contrary findings: those from East Asia had a lower risk of DKD (left position = less risk; purple, blue, red squares), whereas those from Southeast Asia had a higher risk of DKD, compared to long term residents.

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) affects 30% of people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Studies suggest higher rates in Asian populations, especially those born in China–but global comparisons are limited by health system differences and T2D management practices.

These findings—drawn from an ethnically diverse cohort of adults with YOD-highlight the potential role for bar-graph based lifetime risk tools to serve as an equitable and effective communication tool when paired with supportive strategies that promote self-efficacy.

Lifetime risk visuals were more accessible, evoked the highest negative emotion and urgency, which enhanced motivation compared to the other depictions. The lifetime risk bar graph scored highest in accessibility and credibility across all levels of numeracy and graph literacy.

Many with T2D have low CV risk at diagnosis, making early self-management behaviours (e.g., exercise, diet, meds) crucial—before risk rises in adulthood. We tested six CV risk visualizations (one below) to see how they motivate self-management in YOD.
