NEW VIDEO: How a simple mistake ruined my new PC (and my YouTube channel)
A close-up photograph of a CPU socket, showing the LGA pins. The pins appear straight and normal. Just above them is pixelated white text with a red shadow, reading "Please no..."

I accidentally glitched out an animation I was working on and created a perfect example of what the passage of time feels like to someone with ADHD

Rebecca Heineman is probably best known for coding 3DO Doom from zero in 10 weeks after being told it just needed "polish" - the licensee didn't understand what porting involved.

Since hearing that story, she's someone I've looked up to a lot. Now, she's got a different struggle...

Oh just because there are Windows 7 users doesn't mean there aren't going to be companies around the world tossing out entire departments worth of PCs. I'm sure there will be people clinging to Windows 10 for a long time, too, but the vast majority will just buy new PCs.

I guess the campaign worked. It *is* legitimately interesting stuff, we had one of their scanners at Labs while I was at LMG

Feels like I'm seeing a lot of Lumafield stuff showing up on YouTube and socials lately. I'm guessing they're running a campaign?

I mean, obviously, but like, is there something going on?

This, too, is a big mood.

Yeah, it's maybe a little dangerous if you're too focused on them at night, but it's almost hypnotic. I'm glad I was in the passenger seat so I could just keep looking.

That's pretty much how it be sometimes. I guess it's a little bit like that thing where you read something, then realize you don't remember anything you read. I remember a Star Trek episode where someone mentioned being able to pick out a voice in a crowd like it's a normal thing and I'm like ??????

I can only imagine how frustrating that is. For me, I can hear just fine, but sometimes it just breaks up once it comes time to process, especially if the environment is noisy. I hear syllables and I know there's meaning in them, but they don't go together properly, they're just sounds.

panel 1: fizz sitting at his computer. a voice comes from offscreen, but it's barely understandable: "can you fo-d th- la--dry t--i--" fizz presses the spacebar, pauses what he was doing and looks back: "wh-sorry what was that?"

panel 2: the voice retries, but even quieter : "i said ca- yo- --ld t-- la----" fizz turns around in his chair, smiling nervously : "...sorry i-i still didn't understand..."

panel 3: the voice goes "....." fizz, sweating, asks hesitantly : "...just a bit louder please?"

panel 4: the voice sighs : "nevermind." fizz looks away with a sad expression.

It's always really cool driving through an area with a wind farm. Land that's gone unused, harnessing energy that's already there. I think the biggest farms I've personally seen are in semi-arid land in Northern TX, which really surprised me. Apparently there are even bigger ones down near the gulf.

Every time I open a newly installed browser and a search ends up on Google, I'm like "I'm sure I can still find what I'm looking for..."

... I honestly have no idea how anyone uses Google anymore without tearing their hair out. It's so bad.

... All because of an argument between a mom and her adult son.

You can thankfully completely disable that via group policy, but if you're on Home edition there's extra steps. Same deal with Copilot. And even with it completely disabled, Microsoft's horribly inconsistent UI makes sure you still see a button for it from time to time.

Ironically, we've got less of That, and more of This.

Almost feels like the timeline is attacking me specifically because I perceived the world to be boring for the first half of my life, barring 9/11 & Iraq.

I wasn't in a state to enjoy it then, and I'm not in a state to enjoy This now.

Wha, how did I miss this? I checked and I've got nothing on my end saying I left that message. I'm not quite sure how they did that, maybe a zero-width space or something in the username, or some lookalike character for the l.

Randomly looking around wplace, and lo and behold there's a trans flag near where I grew up??

I want to be their friend
A screenshot of wplace showing the region around Topsail Beach in Newfoundland, Canada. Pixel art includes Ramona Flowers from the Scott Pilgrim video game, Leon Kennedy from Resident Evil, Night in the Woods headshots, Kingdra from Pokémon, Misako from Retro City Girls, a transgender flag, a bisexual flag, one each of a brown, green, and purple heart, and some incomplete artwork. Visible text reads "I NEED FRIENDS", "I AM FRIEND", "YURI", "Hi", "Leon", and "UwU"

On one hand, I love seeing people get owned by their own creations when they're clearly wrong

On the other, the explosion of people using some flavour of "@grok is this true" unironically has terrifying consequences

Those proxies, if supported, get auto-swapped for the real clips on export. It's pretty common to do even in high-end workflows with higher quality settings for "pro" formats like ProRes, R3D, CineForm, etc, because they can get so big that sometimes even fast *storage* can become a bottleneck.
eayoung.net
If upgrading is out of the question, or if it still lags, most video editors allow you to create lower res proxies for editing that can greatly reduce memory usage, and once you're satisfied with FX/compositing on a clip, you can often render it in the timeline to speed things up while editing.

If VRAM is *not* sufficient, it will stutter badly, same with RAM. You can check your VRAM (and general GPU) usage in Windows by opening Task Manager, going to the Performance tab, and selecting the GPU. Same with RAM under Memory.

FX & compositing are more dependent on GPU and CPU power.
