one thing to remember about "ICE is going to occupy Democrat strongholds" is that ICE, if it hires to capacity, will employ about 26k people by the end of 2026, which is 1/3 smaller than the NYPD, which is not a large enough police force to occupy New York City itself.

the more i think about this the more i think that his campaign was a showcase for how centrists *say* they want democrats to campaign. the issue is that what this looks like varies from place to place. i would not expect mamdani to be able to win in virginia, but a mamdani-style campaign could!
what’s funny is that if pro-cuomo centrist democrats were less myopic they might see that mamdani was running the kind of campaign that could help rebuild the party brand — accessible with an outsider persona and a focus on “kitchen table” issues.

Metro Paris is as almost as dense as Manhattan (and much denser than Brooklyn and queens) despite no high rises because nearly everything is 4-6 stories. It’s not a difficult special problem!
This dynamic of high rises only being financeable in areas with very high market rents is why upzoning NYC’s suburbs (incl w/in city limits) is so important to lowering costs more broadly and why it’s so troubling that Cuomo has already ruled out rezoning these low-density areas if he becomes mayor.
Another project in JC's outlying areas decides it can't justify the cost of going high-rise. Despite being allowed about 15 floors, they're only doing 6 floors at 51 Morton Pl.

Increased height & density can only compensate for added costs imposed by cities up to a point, especially as rents fall.

It combines the job duties of some of our worst professions — call center, door to door mlm salesperson, Twitter poster
The thing is that running for office is probably legitimately one of the worst white collar professional experiences you can have that doesn’t involve physical or legal risk. It fucking sucks and is horrible. And the higher quality the candidate is the worse it is compared to their other options.
