A mathematical poem

Present to me your most precious lemma
A line of thought that stood the test of time

Where shall you go from here my friend
What rigid walls will you traverse

Another day, another theorem
Shall be unravelled by your expert eye

I realized, a few years back, that it is often possible to “cheat” in combinatorial probability problems by writing up a judiciously structured Markov chain (in a scientific programming language such as Octave).

Antoine Lavoisier (1743-1794) seemingly has an Erdős number of 13. That is wild!

Math thought of the day

People joke that engineers are content with using 3 instead of pi in calculations.

But they really should use 4.

It gives a comfy 27.3% safety margin.

Math thought of the day

To answer people that have doubts about 0.9999… and 1 being the same, I would follow the path of Dedekind: first propose a pair of metaphorical scissors, and then challenge them to cut in between.

The choice of 2d6 vs 1d12: an endless debate in gaming circles (think D&D). How to get the highest result/score/damage, statistically speaking?

This choice ties into stochastic ordering, of which there are many types. Some are content with comparing averages (7 vs 6.5), but it’s not so clear cut.
