Fifth Dawn week: Cast it for 0, and at any point moving forward you can spend 2 at instant speed to destroy all tokens. That's amazing, and it's still only in about 5,400 decks.

Aurelia, the Warleader is the EDHREC Commander of the Day, and is without a doubt a stone cold classic. Ranked 495 and heading 4,577 angels and extra combats decks, this is a commander almost all new players at least considering building, and for good reason.

Darksteel week: Echoing Decay costs two mana at instant speed to wipe out a token swarm. That's very solid if you constantly see token decks in your meta. And even if you just use it to kill some random 1/1 or 2/2 that's still not terrible.

Lady Octopus, Inspired Inventor is the EDHREC Commander of the Day. Ranking #1,016 with 1,751
decks despite being very new, Lady Octopus has been a very popular artifacts and combo commander, cracking the top ten from Marvel's Spider-Man.

Darksteel week: Spawning Pit's text kinda doesn't matter beyond the fact that it's a sacrifice outlet that can be used at instant speed for zero cost. That's it.

Today's EDHREC Commander of the Day is a deep cut; Lu Bu, Master-at-Arms from Portal 3K. Lu Bu is our 2,751st ranked cmdr atop 113 decks, most of which are voltron and equipment themed. Six mana for a hasty, near-unblockable 4/3 is a lot, but you get style points.

Darksteel week: Vedalken Engineer is a really excellent mana dork IF you're playing a heavy artifact deck, or at least a deck with an artifact commander. Two mana to generate two mana every turn moving forward is very solid.

Nicanzil, Current Conductor is the EDHREC Commander of the Day, just a Simic merfolk doing Simic things. Nicanzil is in 1,231 decks and is the 1,240th ranked commander on EDHREC where it leads mostly merfolk, +1 counter, self-mill and explore decks.

Darksteel week: Genesis Chamber can create a ton of artifact creature value, especially if you have a way to tap it to keep your opponents from profiting from that same value.

There is no denying the EDHREC Commander of the Day Mastermind Plum knows how to dress. Atop a mere 220 decks and ranked 2,328 this sartorial superstar almost exclusively heads treasure decks, and he looks like a million bucks doing it.

Darksteel week: Sure there's lots of ways to overrun (Overrun?) in green, and most are better than Echoing Courage, but none are as cheap to cast, and few are instants. It really only works in a token deck, but in that kind of deck it might be worth a look.

The EDHREC Commander of the Day is Malcolm, the Eyes, the 1,909th cmdr in our database, clocking in with 441 mostly cantrip and clues decks. Malcolm is one of four legendary sirens, three of which are Malcolms with the last being Maeve, Insidious Singer.

Darksteel week: It makes for a risky alpha strike since you have to sacrifice all your creatures at the end of turn, but alpha strikes are inherently risky. May as well make sure you kill everyone.

Darksteel Week: In the right deck Hunger of the Nim can turn any body into a one-shot machine. Sorcery speed is for sure limiting, but 1B to give a creature potentially 10+ extra power is hard to ignore, and it's in just over 300 decks on EDHREC.

Padeem, Consul of Innovation is the EDHREC Commander of the Day sitting atop 438 decks at rank 1,910. Padeem primarily heads artifact lists, but he shows up in a whole lot more, protecting artifacts with his orange raisin face in 125,000 different brews.

Mirrodin week: Leonin Abunas gives your artifacts hexproof, which is a tremendously useful ability in a deck running a ton of artifacts, and maybe more so in an equipment list.

Mirrodin week: Note that Lumengrid Sentinel doesn't say cast. An artifact entering triggers it. Making a bunch of Hangarback tokens? Tap all the stuff. In the right deck it's a house and it's only seeing play in about 1,300 decks.

Mirrodin week: Playing a deck with some kind of +1 counter synergy? Then War Elemental can get out of hand FAST. It's in less than 6k decks, and the RRR casting cost can be a problem, but if you can deal with that it can get out of control.

Gut, True Soul Zealot is the EDHREC Commander of the Day. Commonly paired with Agent of the Iron Throne and Inspiring Leader, Gut seems like a pretty chill goblin who just wants to do a little stabbing followed by reanimating your bones. You do you, Gut.

Mirrodin week: Empyrial Plate is a really clean, efficient design that in the right deck can turn a creature into a one-shot machine.

November 27, 2025 at 5:03 PM
Mirrodin week: Wail of the Nim is another infrequently-seen card from Mirrodin. It's an instant-speed way to dodge creature removal, maybe for your whole board, and it can also remove a bunch of little guys. Maybe both.

Mirri, Cat Warrior is the EDHREC card of the day. First printed back in Exodus, Mirri remains the only creature with the combination of first strike, forestwalk and vigilance. We're not convinced those shoulder pads are effective armor, however.

Mirrodin week: Playing an enchantress or enchantress-adjacent deck with few or no artifacts? Then you might want to consider making everyone else play few or no artifacts, too. That just seems fair.
