President Trump is sending troops to intimidate communities in the PNW. Seattle deserves a City Attorney who will stand up to authoritarianism—not call it "an emotional response”. As your next City Attorney, I will always fight for our rights and our city with courage and urgency. #Seattle

Professionals like Erika Evans aren't alone. As shared with @bloomberg.com, we saw a 157% increase in interest in running for office between Nov-Feb vs. the same period last year. Join an Emerge training like Erika Evans and impact your community: emergeamerica.org/candidate-tr...

Former Federal Workers Find an Outlet in Local Elections

If elected, Erika Evans would be the first Black woman and person of color to serve as Seattle City Attorney. She is participating in a six-month 70-hour training program through Emerge. A’shanti F. Gholar, president of Emerge, says government workers are well-positioned for elections because they “know what it takes.”

“I think we have to remember these are civil servants,” said Gholar. “They were there to serve. So this is another way for them to continue their service.”

But it’s not just spurned federal employees that groups like Emerge are seeing in their cohorts.

Tory Hoover, 58, joined Emerge’s winter cohort in January after hearing about the organization while working for the Harris-Waltz campaign. She says that the current administration is “disenfranchising people and trying to keep the middle class down,” which gets her fired up.

“I just did not wanna continue to be that person to always be like, ‘I wish someone would do something,’” she says. “Why am I not standing up for people?”

As a cosmetologist in Rockdale, Georgia, the proud grandmother of two spends a lot of time “behind the chair” talking to those who may become her constituents. She knows what people are struggling with and wants to help them.

While Hoover has not decided what office she’s going to run for, she definitely wants a hands-on role where she can get into “good trouble,” she says.

Arjoon Srikanth, a former software engineer and son of Indian immigrants, is running for Virginia’s 1st House of Delegates District in Arlington, with the hope that he will be the kind of politician he would like to have in office. “I’m worried about the country and I’m worried about what will happen if we don’t step up and do something now,” he said.

The numbers are clear: Seattleites want a change in the City Attorney's Office. We need an experienced public servant who will defend our communities, and l have a plan to do just that.
