I think we as a field would actually be happier if we all collectively admitted that things are very bad right now, instead of pretending that everything is fine, and that all of us will somehow be the lucky ones.

Last time I did a lecturey course, I spent 8-10 hours for 3 hours of lecture. So a little less, but I kept things easy for myself by sticking closely to the textbook. Two of those hours each week were just for reading the book chapter.
