Former National Park Ranger, current Historian of Science, and occasionally an amateur(ish) photographer.

If I were to describe my job incredibly poorly? I write eulogies for federal buildings slated for decontamination and decommissioning.
Six years ago I visited Vienna for only a day and a half. By accident, I came across the Judenplatz Holocaust Memorial.

Zum Gedenken an die mehr als 65 000 österreichischen
Juden, die in der Zeit von 1938 bis 1945 von den
Nationalsozialisten ermordet wurden.

Do not ever forget, especially now.

People insulated by age and wage will allow these tragedies to continue to happen.

However, we can stem the course... if we're willing to think beyond ourselves.

If we realize that we're a part of a broader community, not just islands of self-superiority.

If we stop acting childish.

Las Conchas burned an acre a second for the first 12 hours, ejecting burning debris 20 miles from the hypocenter. In the end, 243 square miles were obliterated.

The fire temperatures were so extreme that engine blocks melted and rocks exploded due to their moisture turning into steam. 2/

I sympathize with Los Angeles. Thirteen and a half years ago, thousands of us in Los Alamos had to flee an unprecedented inferno.

Nothing gives you pause like watching a land you love turned to ash. And few things more angering than people saying the drought which scoured the land is a hoax. 1/

It's been years since I've visited Tsankawi Pueblo. And did it ever let me know how it felt about my absence.

As the sun dropped, the wind and the grit yelled at me. Not out of anger or malice, but annoyance. Annoyance that, while no longer wearing the green and gray, I don't visit often. 1/

Cats. They can be difficult muses to photograph, but always fun from a technical perspective.

New camera, who this?

Cat photography.

Expectations (after lots of patience) and reality.

I've been out of the house so much over the past week that Clyde decided he needed to be extra silly. So he decided to flop around on top of my bookcase while I played some original X-COM.

Awesome! It's been years since I've poked around, and need to get some new panoramas one of these days. This old cell phone shot is just a bit tired now.

That being said, how was the Dome Road? I'm assuming it's in fairly reasonable shape, though still closed just north of Cochiti?

This is something I posted to my Facebook account almost 7 years ago. Though VICE Media might be a shell of its former self and not apply, a lot of the argument still stands. It's amazingly predictable how misguided tech financing can be, even outside the obvious memes at the time (e.g Juicero).

A lifetime ago, I worked at Wupatki National Monument; a beautiful landscape resting on the western edge of the Navajo Nation and the Painted Desert. Also one of the loneliest places I've ever lived.

My greatest neighbors were a mated pair of ravens. Both always posed well for the camera!

Milwaukee to Los Alamos in 2011.
Seventeen months deep in the gray fog.
Imposter looking for validation.

Two days. 1,500 miles.

Crossing into Nebraska on I-80.
Omaha. Western outskirts.
Rooms for rent by the week.
Thought about taking that exit.

Never did.

Had to drive.
Still driving.

Considering this is the internet:

This is Clyde.
Clyde is cat.
I am Clyde's food bringer.
He graces me with his presence.
Sometimes he claws the hell out of me.

Actually, he claws the hell out of me all the time.

Open wounds aren't great to have while documenting historic nuclear facilities.

Time to wait for my mind to tell me it's time to go to bed.

While I stand gormlessly in the lobby of my consciousness, it's as good a time as any to trawl through some of the less-traveled folders of my hard drive.

Poking through the mass of collections on my hard drives, I found some stuff I submitted to the New Mexico State Fair years back. Naturally these pictures didn't go anywhere in terms of recognition, but they were a great excuse to take a risk and experiment.

In another career which feels a lifetime away, I used to break out my camera and photograph around my work. Nowadays I don't have the luxury of time, but there is a back catalog of stuff tucked away on my hard drive.

There is beauty and art that comes from cultivating curiosity.

Share it!
