This is different from freshwater flowing east and south-west of Greenland, that more easily enters the Labrador Sea.

This result highlights the importance of considering the different pathways fresh waters follow in the subpolar North Atlantic when evaluating their future influence on the region.

In line with previous studies, this suggests that the fresh Baffin / Hudson Bay waters are unlikely to directly affect the Labrador Sea interior.

However, they might have a more indirect influence of on the interior subpolar North Atlantic as they recirculate in the Subpolar Gyre.

The drifters remained on the Labrador shelf, along the Canadian coast, until they reached Flemish Pass, south of the Labrador Sea convection region.

There, the majority of the drifters left the shelf and headed north-eastwards, apparently recirculating into the Subpolar Gyre

Here we specifically investigated how the relatively fresh waters from west of Greenland and Baffin Bay circulate over and away from the Labrador Shelf.

We use trajectories from surface drifters deployed in the last years around Greenland, which provide new data in previously undersampled regions

Why does it matter?

In the coming decades, increasing amounts of Greenland and Arctic waters will enter the North Atlantic, potentially affecting important ocean processes. These waters first flow along the Greenland and Canada coast and their pathways into the open ocean are not fully understood.
