Here is NIDA They were relatively effective in maintaining R01 numbers with little or no multi-year funding, but substantially increased UG1, UG3, and U24 cooperative agreements.

This may be the most important paper ever published about NIH funded research. What if NIH had been 40% smaller? Under that scenario, NIH-funded research on more than half of 557 drugs approved 2000-2023 would have never happened!

You can put a dollar amount on how much has been saved, but the cost of what has been lost is incalculable. “It’s people who will get cancer in 10, 20 or 30 years who will really pay the price for these cuts,” Dr. Naxerova said.

These researchers and so many others worked to ensure that Americans had access to the best medical treatments available &that they had first access to those treatments. That is, they worked until now when National Institutes of Health is gutted & frozen grants at universities across the US.
