Local news this morning reported that marketplace health insurance premiums will increase in Virginia by 22%-40% beginning January 1.

Some employer-sponsored health insurance premiums will also increase here around the same time (including Anthem).

Why? Market uncertainty. Aka the Big BS Bill.

At the federal level it is literally for children, the disabled, and senior citizens according to the federal government.
From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services: Who’s eligible for Medicaid? You may qualify for free or low-cost health care through Medicaid based on your income and family size. Eligibility rules differ among states. In all states, Medicaid gives health coverage to some individuals and families, including children, parents, people who are pregnant, elderly people with certain incomes, and people with disabilities. Some states have expanded their Medicaid programs to cover other adults below a certain income level.

This is Ken. Ken is a Virginia resident. Ken’s company is contracted to build a $1.2B ICE “detention center” in El Paso, TX. Last week, the company won a massive $1.2 billion contract from the Trump administration to build and run the nation’s largest ICE “detention facility” to date at Fort Bliss Army base in El Paso, TX. 50501 Virginia’s post: Henrico local Ken Wagner is the majority Owner, President, and CEO of Acquisition Logistics LLC. The company, registered at a home near the Tuckahoe area, was awarded a contract on July 18 to build and run an ICE detention facility in El Paso, Texas, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. Ken still has a choice. What would you do?

Here in Virginia, we have a saying that’s so important to us that it’s on our flag.

Sic semper tyrannis or “thus always to tyrants.”

The flag also depicts a woman literally stomping out the tyrant whose crown has toppled off his head. She even freed the nip.

PRWORA of 1996, signed by Bill Clinton, excludes those without permanent legal status from accessing federal programs like Medicare and Medicaid with some exceptions. This law also very likely preempts state and local law.

So, once again, the GOP is screaming about a problem that doesn’t even exist

Undocumented immigrants are largely ineligible for federal healthcare programs like Medicaid and Medicare and are ineligible for most federal health care benefits, aside from emergency care. Due to the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act of 1996 (PRWORA), undocumented immigrants (and immigrants without permanent status like DACA recipients, TPS holders, or nonimmigrant visa holders) are barred from access to most federal benefits, including federal health care programs and assistance, including Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

From the US Department of Labor: With regard to any young employee under the age of 16, do any of them: Expand All | Collapse All Work during school hours? If your answer is YES, then you are likely not in compliance. Minors 14- and 15-years old may not work during school hours. School hours are determined by the local public school in the area where the minor is residing while so employed, even if the minor does not attend the public school (i.e., attends a private school or is home schooled).

Driving home and seeing basically any gas station in any state disproves that, & by a difference of $3/gal. in Portland. The government’s own data also disproves this claim, showing $3.15/gal in June.

The last time gas averaged $1.98 was between May and June of 2020.
Data from eisa.gov, US retail gas prices (dollars per gallon) Months and years from 2018-now, last record June 2025, which was $3.15. The last time gas averaged near $1.98 was between May 2020 ($1.870) and June 2020 ($2.082).
