Good piece--but also A Raisin in the Sun is a play, not a novel.

In my district, things actually got better. The middle schools started doing more independent reading, and doing fewer units on whole-class books that many kids just didn't read. But non-reading has always been a huge issue. We have kids for 6 hours a day; they should spend at least an hour reading!

This is bad, but it's hardly new. I'm a HS English teacher in a rich district, and the first time I asked my class how many books they'd read in middle school, I was shocked. That was over ten years ago: literacyinleafstrewn.blogspot.com/2012/10/one-...
One third of my ninth grade class reports never finishing a book in middle school
I do not want to be one of those teachers who says, "My students never read a book until I inspired them, and now they love reading!"  I don...

Saw her at the Paradise in Boston--a small club. She was amazing and ferocious.

Interesting to see residents arguing against the idea that, because zoning has a racist history, zoning reform is anti-racist: www.baltimorebrew.com/2025/11/25/r...
Residents rally to say: Removing zoning guardrails will worsen racial disparities, not heal them | Baltimore Brew
“We have heard every justification possible, every fallacy used to advance this bill,” protesters against Brandon Scott’s Baltimore upzoning measure said outside City Hall.

I know how you feel! bsky.app/profile/ethe...
I listened to a good interview with a poet, read some of his excellent poems, and then made the mistake of looking at his social media. Yikes. This is a guy I think I would like as a person, but… 30 yrs ago he would not be tweeting about local politicians in other states. Social media is toxic.

Pemberton Street near Sargent St.

Yes! That is the one in our neighborhoodI hate the most--because it's on a busier street than Reed and there's even less space around the tree.

Reed Street!

Great idea. I ride my bike by there every day on my way to my teaching job, and it always makes me happy. A few years ago I even scribbled a sonnet about it in weird dimeter couplets... Found it:
