Each year Norway sends Christmas trees to some towns in Scotland as a symbol of gratitude for support during World War II and also recognising long standing historical links.

The lighting of the tree is a significant event that marks the start of the festive season in each city. 🎄

2025 has been the celebration of Glasgow's 850th Anniversary.
We picked out some classic stops for a EuroWalk to discover some of the European links right in the city. Mind you we didn't expect that the George Square statues would be taken away to be refurbished!!

Guy Fawkes was born around Aprill in 1570 in Stonegate, York. He was baptised at St Michael le Belfrey (below) on the 15th of that month. His father, a Church of England lawyer, died when Guy was eight. His mother later married a Catholic, which, along with Guy’s schooling at St Peter’s

Nelson's Victory crew included a Brazilian and a Russian, 2 Indians, 2 Swiss, 2 Portuguese, 3 Danes and 3 Norwegian sailors. There were 3 Germans, 4 Italians, 6 Swedes, 7 Dutchmen, 9 West Indians and an African, as well as 21 Americans, 63 Irish, 64 Scots, 441 English.... oh, and 3 French men, too.

The Radio Scotland Out of Doors programme was fab again on Saturday. The piece on the Lordship of the Isles was really interesting - mention of Scotland/Norse history too (that all starts at 7mins 30 secs but the section on Islay in general runs from the start) www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

Earlier this year, an excavation in Rousay by @uhiarchaeology.bsky.social uncovered an expressive carved stone face. We have a similar fellow in the cathedral, so archaeologists visited today to examine them side by side!
