“Is this your work?”
Reynard was pointing over at the unfinished projects on the table by the cooler, Hasegawa saw with deep relief. To these three idiots, Corvus probably looked like just a ball of black scrap. Hasegawa wouldn’t know what he’d do if they threatened to take the sophont away as collateral.
Instead, Asher the slime lumbered over to the table and lifted the car battery easily in one big, yellow hand. He made a lacklustre show of examining the item with his little, black eyes. Then he let it drop to the concrete. Three of the sequence gears snapped off and bounced away with a tinkle of metal. Hasegawa suppressed a flinch of machine-sympathy.
“Aw, Ash! You big goof!” Sigurd laughed. “You went and broke the professor’s toy!”
“You work with a lot of fragile stuff, don’t you?” Reynard asked him. “I bet there’s all kinds of nasty little accidents that could set you back in your line of work. You could really do with some peace and quiet, am I right?”
This had gone far enough. Corvus was clicking again.
“Three-sixty?” Hasegawa sighed.
“You have it?”
“Not right now. Five cycles.”

They all laughed quietly at this simple statement. “You want a bath on the ship, Fei?” asked Avalynne.
“Yes,” said the cat. She still hadn’t opened her eyes. “Wet.”
They waited patiently for Fei to explain what that last bit meant, but as they did, she began snoring.
“So fucking cute,” said Avalynne. “Captain? Your answer?”

“Oh, but before thou runneth off to choke upon the fucking air of Tier Zero,” he added. “Foreman-Regent Keyran of House Aniranas did come by our humble gaol in the dead of last night.”
“He did?” asked Sakir with narrowed eyes. “To what end?”
“To speak about thee, Sakir. To ask after thy wellbeing. And to ask me whether I considered thee a noble sort.”
Sakir chuckled, since he could think of no better way to react. “Whatever could the Foreman-Regent think to accomplish with such questioning?”
“Nay, I know not. However, if thou needeth additional reason to make thy return speedy, there it is.”
“There it is,” Sakir repeated with a sigh. “Thank you.”

And why should he receive her gaze with such joyous accommodation?
Lady Avalynne claimed to be a free agent in romance. But to accept her advance without proper consideration would hurt his new liege. Of that, Sakir had no doubt. And so, up came the shields once more. Avalynne would have no more of his failing will. No matter how sweet her smile.

“A ‘byne, my lady,” said Sakir, rubbing his eyes. “She is a resident of the Golden Halls, I understand based on her manner of dress. The foremost concubine residence in the Quilted quarter. Do not let the gilding of that place fool thee, Lady Avalynne. Her work is naught but debauchery.”
“Okay, thanks for the warning,” Avalynne grinned. “And just so I’m super safe from the influence of this den of iniquity, the Golden Halls are in which direction?”
Sakir glowered, saying nothing, and Avalynne laughed anew.
But Rune turned next to Marcus. His eyes had followed the woman into the crowds, where he was staring with a curious expression. Rune slapped him on the arm to get his attention.
“Don’t you go getting any funny ideas,” she warned him. “We aren’t buying you a prismatic blade, and we certainly aren’t buying you a night with a concubine.”

“You alright?” she asked Marcus, who was staring at nothing while nervously tapping the casing of the radio in his hand.
He started at her attention. Beside him, Rune looked up at him with concern. But Marcus merely smiled.
“I’m just a little nervous,” he said. “This is it, isn’t it? The end of the line. After we take down Landless, we’ll have finished getting justice for Lady Emma.”
“And then we can all go home,” Rune said. “It hasn’t been all that long, but I do miss Husk.”
Marcus shared his agreement by squeezing her shoulder, and she leant her body’s weight against him. He was hiding something in those big, tired eyes, but Avalynne didn’t feel like prying right now.
She looked away from their private moment and into the narrow eyes of Sakir, who was still bent over his work at the train’s piston. His attention darted away from her at once, but not before Avalynne had registered his sadness. She didn’t even need to use her abilities to read his feelings. Yes, a bit more time with Sakir would have been nice. He’d take her hand in the Top Tier’s parks, order her tea and cakes in the pavilions. Maybe make love to her in the private dark of his bedroom. Would they get that time in the end? It would be hard for Avalynne to find a moment to sleep with her boyfriend if his home station got all wrapped up in a violent coup. Or if one of them was dead.

“Why don’t you tell us about this delivery that Landless ordered?” asked the safe, pragmatic and unassuming Marcus, and Avalynne felt Cliff’s ire soften as he found himself with a measure of control. “You took a box to the Elevator, but where did the box come from? What did you fill it with?”Cliff sniffed through his nose and put his hands in the pockets of his breeches. “Naught.”“You didn’t fill it with anything?”“Nay. I was told to take one of our boxes we use for the red and leave it void. As far as I know, it was still empty when it reached Top Tier.”A flash of a memory in his mind. “But you left it somewhere first,” Avalynne said.Cliff frowned down at her. “Perchance I did. We stored it overnight in one of the Bright Tier Halls of Antiquity. One that only I have access to.”“So, nobody went in there and tampered with the delivery box?” asked Marcus.“I cannot see how such would be possible. So you see? All I did was send an empty box up to the Top Tier for processing. That is no crime.”“And the access logs for the Halls would agree with you?”“Most assuredly,” Cliff said with a confident grin.So, a sealed room with a single door. Cliff the only one with the key. And he wasn’t lying when he said he’d done nothing to the box while it was in storage. There was only one possibility left.Avalynne glanced up at Marcus and found him looking right back. Her deviancy read that he’d had exactly the same thought as her.The Halls of Antiquity, the old docking bays of the original Prism station. If a zero hadn’t gotten in through the main corridor, there was only one other way they could have hidden themselves in the delivery box. From outside the station.

By this time, Sakir was slithering purposefully into range. He readied his blade with a sweep of his arm, and then fell still. His shoulders were hunched like a hunting cobra. And Anvile, now alone, turned her hooded head to regard him. At once, Marcus pushed his digital influence through the singing of the soil and into the radio in his hand. It hurt, but he was able to pull the audio signal together into an equalised frame that let him hear both sides of the conversation taking place amongst the clouds of flying dust.“Lady Anvile,” Sakir greeted with a formal, duellist’s bow. “Would that we could match swords under better circumstances. Thy reputation as a martial combatant is unquestionable.”“Such a loyal servant, to honour his regents so,” Anvile replied.“Yet thou shouldst be aware, Lady, that thy son has trained me well in the way of the blessed steel.”“So I see. But consider for me, Sakir. Who trained Alyx? Do you know?”
