MULHOLLAND DRIVE (****) Intended as a TV pilot but its rejection by the network and Lynch's belief in the two leads results in one of his best films. Ye with a rigid belief in story paradigms, abandon all hope here. @criterion.bsky.social 4K transfer does justice to picture and sound.

Agree a 100% with this.

This impacts around 150k people. Importantly - confidential equality data including protected characteristics, including trans people's identities, were breached in June. Members of this union and Prospect Union were told today, almost 4 months later. The Information Commissioner's Office ..

SPRING NIGHT SUMMER NIGHT (***) A early US microbudget feature about step siblings trying to reconcile their romantic feelings towards one another. Has a great sense of place with beautifully restored cinematography. @indicator.bsky.social do a great job in pushing this unknown gem.

THE BRUTE (*) A sexploitation flim on domestic violence from the director of THE BITCH. It tries to make some points on DV which is undermined by Bruce Glover popping up in drag. @indicator.bsky.social extras make it clear its a case of good intentions gone wrong. A curiosity.

CHARLIE BUBBLES (**) A meandering tale of a succesful writer returning to Manc with locals trying to get a piece of him. Decades ago, a friend went nuts trying to get a print for a Salford film festival. @indicator.bsky.social release is up to their usual high standard.

MARATHON MAN (***) Once the punchline for every dentist gag during the 70's-80's. The visual composition and score make this a good fit alongside THE PARALLAX VIEW as both build the feeling there is a greater threat just out of frame.

RAGTIME (***) Took me decades to catch this and its theme is depressingly relevant even today. A lot of familiar names appear but one feels the loss of Howard Rollins who is great here. This edition has a workprint though the claim of it being a director's cut is open to debate.

A WORLD WAR II FAIRYTALE (***) I gave up crowdfunding films when over half didn't deliver, this is an exception. This doc took 10+ years to complete and the love for Michael Mann's neglected horror shows. A contributor observes that ruins have their appeal and its true here.

@vinsyn.bsky.social have done an excellent job putting together extras on how this even got made. Blame German tax avoidance scheme. Essential for anyone programming a bad film night.

SIDNEY SHELDON'S BLOODLINE (*) Imagine SUCCESSION minus the humor and plotting and you get this nonsense. Like getting a tin of Quality Streets but its full of Coffee Cremes that turn out to be poop. No one sets out to make a bad film but darn it, they do their best here.

SNAPSHOT (*1/2) After a strong opening sequence, a confused story develops about an exploited young model which is meh. That said, the camera work and art direction are superb and @indicator.bsky.social 4K transfer really makes the imagery pop.

PATRICK (***) Great fun from Hitchcock protégé Richard Franklin with a tight script by Everett De Roche about a comotose patient with attachment issues. @indicator.bsky.social have also included the shorter Italian cut which has a score from Argento's favourite band, Goblin.

THE DARK HALF (**1/2) Not entirely successful Stephen King adaptation but still has a lot of good stuff including a bird attack that out does those in THE BIRDS. @VinegarSyndrome extras do a fine job in highlighting the films positive elements.

HEARTS OF DARKNESS (****) Somewhere in one of my cupboards is a copy of the 5 hour workprint of APOCALYPSE NOW and it still doesn't give any insight to the BTS drama on the production as depicted here. As strong as the film itself. See also Les Blank's BURDEN OF DREAMS.

Got the impression that Romero wanted to do so much more then zombie movies but could be hit and miss. A personal favourite is KNIGHTRIDERS which has stand out performances by Ed Harris and Tom Savini in a rare dramatic role.

Years ago, one of the NOTLD alumni, Richard Ricci, was a mentor on a short film I directed in New Mexico. I bugged him with Romero questions but the project that most fascinated me was about the assassination of Rafael Trujillo, to have starred Ed Harris as a CIA plotter.

DAWN OF THE DEAD (***1/2) Far funnier then I remember. The scene where a trigger happy SWAT officer complains about illegal immigrants being provided luxury hotels sent a recognizable jolt. At the end, the zombies are an improvement over what remains of humanity.

FEAR & DESIRE (**1/2) Back in 1997, I had a bad VHS dub of this. Now we have it on 4K. @KinoLorber have released the original cut which is 10 mins longer but surprisingly better paced. Better then most student films produced even now. The commentaries give historical context.

JADE (*1/2) As visually interesting and erotic as a Milk Tray advert. Friedkin appears to use the story as an excuse to put together various set pieces that don't gel as a whole. Maybe it'd play better as TikTok clips? Friedkin would comeback with the superior THE HUNTED and BUG.

So where are all those organisations that I was publicly calling out on twitter? Are they coming here too?
f-a-q.bsky.social
There's a collectors market for ex-rental VHS tapes so check how many are in there.

I better not regret this...
