Jochen Mass (McLaren-Ford-M23) narrowly lost out on 3rd place to Niki Lauda. Hans-Joachim Stuck was 5th in a March-Ford-761. John Watson brought his Penske-Ford-PC4 home in 6th for the last point.

Having battled for much of the race, James Hunt pulled clear, winning from Jody Scheckter. Niki Lauda just holding on to 3rd. Hunt set up a title showdown with Lauda in Japan.

At Watkins Glen, James Hunt (McLaren-Ford) won the US Grand Prix East from Jody Scheckter (Tyrrell-Ford) & Niki Lauda (Ferrari). Hunt's win set up a title decider in Japan. Either Lauda (68 points) or Hunt (65) would win the title.

#HappyBirthday to Siegfried Stohr, 73 today.

Italian F3 champion in 1978, Stohr won at Enna-Pergusa in the 1980 European F2 championship. He started 9 Grand Prix for Arrows during 1981, finishing just outside the points (7th) at Zandvoort.

Remembering Eugenio Castellotti, born #OnThisDay in 1930.

With Lancia, and Ferrari, Castellotti started 14 Grand Prix (1955-1957), finishing 2nd twice. In sports cars, he won the Mille Miglia (1956), and the 12 Hours of Sebring (1956). He was killed while testing at Modena, on 14 March 1957.
