the Calender has thrust upon us more holidays, that we may delight and despair
8. Menamaurnan. A time to honor and remember the twelve Moons that once graced Meridian’s night sky, before they were eaten by The Sun. The Last Moon always appears this night, to mourn her wives with the city. 9. Mithen. The festival of masks. Parades flood the streets, but beware when two meet. Assemblies of amorous congress and pugilism contests are at their highest on this day of anonymity. 10. Bilanx. Social order is reversed. Boss toils for laborers, the rich trade their finery for the rags of the poor, and princes hope they make it to the morrow lest they be replaced by their paupers. 11. Alyein. Also known as Wizards’ Day. A time for ingesting as many hallucinogens as one can. The phantasms become corporeal if enough people see the same one, which inevitably happens to the joy and/or terror of all. 12. Dyrstig. A Day to make The Sun think twice. 24-hour wars are fought, competitions of endurance and feats of strength performed, and crowds gather to scream their lungs out at the Orb Beyond the Sky. One day It will come, and Meridian will not go down without a fight.

while the bees' influence has waned in recent times, the legacy of their reign can be felt by all those who wish to traverse the city
Tessellated Neighborhoods, Plexiform Streets Due to an ancient and far-reaching anthophilous influence, the neighborhoods of Meridian fall into a hexagonal pattern when viewed from above. One might think this would ease navigation, and they'd even be correct—if it wasn't for the streets. The arteries of the Boundless city are an ever-shifting network of avenues and alleyways that circumvent reason. Citizens of a timid demeanor may spend their whole lives in their sexenary community for fear of never finding their way home. When attempting to leave a neighborhood, there is a 3-in-6 chance you will become lost. This chance is reduced by 1 if you have a Living Map of the vicinity. Likewise if you are well-acquainted with the neighborhood. You will never lose your way if you can convince an apiarist to guide you. If you do become lost, roll 1d6. On a 1, you fail to leave the neighborhood and a random encounter occurs. On any other number, you wind up traveling to different hex than you intended. A result of 2 is the next hex clockwise and so on, with 6 being the next hex counter-clockwise.

a dungeon crawl pbta? that uses 3d6+stat? it's more likely than you think
save when you attempt to avoid imminent peril, roll+cautious. on a 14+ you avoid it. on an 10-13, you suffer a lesser form of the consequences. on a miss, you take the full effect. overcome when you strive to do something beyond your ability, roll+intrepid. on a 14+, you manage to do it. on a 10-13, it costs you something (time, gear, positioning, effectiveness). on a miss, prepare for the worst. the dark when you are enveloped in darkness, roll+intrepid. on a 14+, you keep it together. on a 10-13, you are overwhelmed. on a miss, panic takes you, either flee or become incapacitated. overwhelmed when you are overwhelmed, you must overcome to do things normally within your faculty. if you would roll for a move, roll another set of dice and decide which is for overcome and which is for the other move.

yes the sun is trying to break through the sky to eat us, but what's the color out today?
The Shattered-Glass-Sky Each dawn, The Sun tries to break through the sky and the cracked firmament shifts under the pressure. Thus every day Meridian is bathed in a different color of refracted sunlight. Someday the sky will give way, and The Sun will swallow the city whole. But today is not that day. Rejoice! and roll on the following table to determine the hue. Mind the color-laws, and that dressing to match or clash with the sunlight has political implications. 1. Red. Duels are legal, refusal of one illegal. They say the blood fills the deepest cracks in the sky. Don't ask how it gets up there. 2. Orange. Collecting taxes, fines, fees, and rent is illegal. An Orange First of the Month is celebrated by nearly-all, and dreaded by those at the top of wretched hierarchy. 3. Yellow. Cats have the right-of-way. Many stay home to avoid crossing a feline, as they have long figured this out and love to torment friend and foe alike. 4. Green. Eating plants is illegal, for today they can scream. Fast if you must, just don't disturb the peace. The sound will haunt you for weeks. 5. Blue. Any speech above a whisper is punishable by fine, determined by decibel level. Unsurprisingly, many libraries have adopted this policy as well. 6. Indigo. Exchanging money for goods is illegal. Be sure to hold on to some odds and ends to barter with, lest you go without. 7. Violet. Stealing is legal. Try not to get caught, as possession of stolen goods will likely be illegal on the morrow. Most shops close, and bar their doors and windows. 8. The same as the day before.

holidays in Boundless Meridian are as violent as they are joyous
3. Gebyrd. It is considered a lucky Year when this fertility celebration happens in Spring. It is customary to give flower wreaths to loved ones, decorate eggs with paint, and pelt your enemies with said eggs. 4. Perdonum. A time for forgiveness. It is fashionable to gift food to those who pelted you with eggs last Gebyrd. Debtors who capture their creditors on this Day are released from their obligation. 5. Steypa. The tea festival. The markets bustle on the most aromatic Day of the Year, but be wary of finding yourself between gangs of milk-befores and milk-afters with their weapons drawn. 6. Badan. This Day of bathing is often used as a time of quiet reflection and a reprieve from the hectic activities of other Holidays. Friends and loved ones of orthodox worshipers of Saint Badan especially rejoice on this Day. 7. Auctus. A time of feasts and merriment. None go hungry is the Law of the Day. Farmers jealously guard their crops, for ardent celebrants will harvest them regardless of their maturity.

today i've been daydreaming about a gonzo science-fantasy game. i started fleshing out the first thing that came to mind, a sentient calender
The Elusive Calendar Whether peasant or king, all who call Boundless Meridian home answer to The Calender. None know its Mind, and any attempts to influence its Will are ruinous for the interloper. At the end of a Year, roll 1d6+8 to determine how many Months are in the Year to come. On the first of a Month, roll 2d6+20 to determine the number of Days to follow. Debts and taxes are collected on the first. There is a 50% chance a Holiday occurs between the last and the first Day of every Month. Roll on the following table to determine the others as they occur. 1. Ardor. Whether it is a celebration of love or lust is highly contested between the allo- romantics and sexuals. One thing is for certain, the streets will run red with festivities and blood. 2. Theasthai. A day to honor playwrights and poets. Any Laws on public performance are lifted, though many arrests are made as aspiring artistes inevitably come to blows over turf.

i'm having a lot of fun with the worldbuilding involved in writing these. i had no idea there was a cult of scribes that lived in the dark, only using light to ensure the accuracy of their work, until i did this one
5.1 Veiled Scribe Curse the sun! Gone are the days when the brightest light you'd ever seen was at the end of a candle as you poured over hallowed texts.
