In August 2023, when the Chennai remote sweatshop RIF’d me, I repurposed my wipeboard. It became my war board. I’ve been using it to track certifications. My morning Red Bull icebox is in there, so I have to see it and what’s on it.

If anything, knowing that all of them are in their mid-70s, it felt like the perfect farewell and send off for two bands who helped set my course in life and whose music saw me through some of my darkest and brightest hours.

But from the first drum beat and Fred Schneider’s vocals on “Cosmic Thing” at the beginning to final notes of “Freedom of Choice” as the closer, my guards were down and eyes wet. I was sharing space with Gerald Casale, whose Night Flight interview hit me like a lightening strike.
