I'm a crusty old nerd who chases bright shiny things and loves playing with old computers :) Especially my Atari 800XL and Amiga. I build castles in the cloud(s) […] [bridged from https://oldbytes.space/@feoh on the fediverse by https://fed.brid.gy/ ]

OK, _another_ pinned post time :)

Folks, here's the thing. I am _happy_ to hear your opinions on AI. I have in fact, in part due to feedback I've received, stopped using AI art in work product I create because I agree that it cheapens any brand it's used in.

But I am _not_ going to stop using […]

@knizer I’m proud of our president Sally Kornbluth. I’m just staff but she seems like an exceptional leader!

Hey @willmcgugan - congratulations on becoming a @ThePSF fellow! Very richly deserved!!!

Thank you @arstechnica - I have a LOT of sources in my RSS feed reader.

But whose articles do I actually READ? Far and away it's yours.

Keep being awesome and thank you!

On a happier note, my electronica OTD on this (for me!) virtual Friday is the latest collaboration between Thys of Noisia fame and Machindrum and it ROCKS! :)

"Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night." - Dylan Thomas

@glyph @dashdsrdash As vocal opponents of AI code assistants, I have a question.

Very often of late I find these tools can be VERY helpful to me in overcoming aspects of my visual disability.

I am poring over a 300 line API definion. The documentation is VERY bad. I am STUCK, trying to figure […]

OOF. My fancy Catpuccin wezterm theme + pre-commit makes for one :blobsad: partially blind guy. Time to revert my wezterm config unless I can figure a work-around!

feoh.oldbytes.space.ap.brid.gy
@martin OK so the only "problem" with Catpuccin is that once you get bitten by the bug you want to go THEME ALL THE THINGS!

I do appreciate you mentioning it though.Catpuccin Mocha is dark and high contrast enough that my underpowered eyeballs can handle it, and having a consistent color scheme […]

@wez wezterm makes me happy on the regular :)

Today's little spark of joy:

Adding the line: colorscheme = "Catpuccin Mocha" into my wezterm.lua and watching my running wezterm window reflect the new color scheme immediately!

@popey It's a good thing your friend saved me by bringing you back giblets for your crocs :)

I would have taken it as a life goal to find something UTTERLY awesome to send you if I ever manage to vacation someplace sufficiently exotic and amazing :)

Actually, thinking this through, I can see […]

This last post brought to you by the UTTERLY MEANINGLESS fact that my startup time went from _148 microseconds down to 21 microseconds_ and that was SO unreasonably satisfying and video game like (ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED!) I could VERY easily see myself obsessively reducing this even more.

BUT […]

We need to acknowledge that working effectively with AI programming tools is HARD - they're unintuitive, full of traps and can churn out huge volumes of bad code if you let them

But they can also greatly amplify your existing programming expertise if you know how to wield them

It turns out […]

@aburka @neovim using the tools that work for you is all that really matters! I do really enjoy blink. I’ve never tried CoC, but from everything I’ve heard it might not make sense to adopt that thing at this point :-)

@simon Actually looking closely at one of my saved artifacts there's nothing special about them. I'll bet Sonnet 4.5 could create similar artifacts and all I need is an HTML canvas and an http server to serve it.
feoh.oldbytes.space.ap.brid.gy
@simon Getting rid of Claude Code because my employer MIT is generously paying for GH Copilot and their new CLI with Claude Sonnet 4.5 is actually pretty effective.

The one thing i'll miss are artifacts, but not $210/year worth :)

Have you seen/heard of any of the open weight models being […]

It's going to get to the point where we all start running Lil' Snitch or similar software to scream bloody murder when an app phones home.

I guess we should probably all be doing that ALREADY but I sure don't :)

Does anyone out there actually use and love the built in @neovim completion enging?

For one thing, the ergonomics are... Not what I want. I tried super hard to get used to using XO when I wanted completion, but it just felt cumbersome and painful.

And then there's the problem that the bundled […]

git submodules really are awful but sometimes they're the hero you need, even if they're not the hero you deserve.

(This PSA brought to you by me ripping out my non existent hair trying to replace an old repo with a new one at the same submodule location. TL:DR - if you're still seeing the old […]
