It was also a treat on Wednesday to cross the Danube to Buda to see my great friend and colleague @daniell0ck.bsky.social present our work at the European Association of Sport Managment on the complexities of club and national team identities during international football matches.

It was great to meet so many interesting people at the event who are applying the ESIM principles in various European football contexts. I look forward to continuting our conversations and collaborating on crowd mangement.

Key messages were to a) understand fans' social identities, b) empower supporters to express these identities in safe/legal ways, c) communicate with crowds to facilitate positive interactions and maintain dialogue, d) differentiate policing to only intervene against individuals who pose a threat.

What a wonderful trip to Budapest this week for the UEFA Safety and Security Conference! I presented research on ESIM (the Elaborated Social Identity Model) to explain the social identity processes of crowd disorder escalation and de-escalation.

Today was the culmination of my favourite class of the year which is a collaboration I lead between @uniofstandrews.bsky.social Business School and Dundee United Football Club, in which we examine the role of Social Identity processes for Leadership in a professional sports club. 🧵

For colleagues in Business Schools, the British Journal of Social Psychology was recently ranked as a 3* journal in the AJG2024 list, so it's a fantastic place to publish research on organisational and other relevant social processes.

President Carter even once indulged me in some banter about Scottish football which still makes me chuckle.

They were remarkable people, and I was proud to work with and know them.

Sometimes these would be at offical events, but often they would stop for a chat and a joke in the corridor or by the coffee machine. They were very warm people, and were interested in both the work and the backgrounds of their interns.

The work was fascinating, energising, and it was a privilege to work with a collection of such diverse and interesting people. One of the highlights of working at @TheCarterCenter were the regular interactions with both Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter.

Both internships focussed on the first free and fair Presidential elections in Liberia. I also had the opportunity to have an hour-long meeting with him as part of the Bobby Jones Scholarship.

On the day of Predident Jimmy Carter's funeral, I wanted to record the impact he had on my life. In 2005-2006 I completed two internships at The Carter Center, first in Conflict Resolution and then in the Democracy Program.

The article stars with a quote on "pack mentality". Describing complex human behaviour as animalistic isn’t helpful for explaining behaviour or offering solutions for effective management. Only by recognising how group actions reflect shared identities/norms can we understand collective behaviour.
