The thing with car culture is that you create a social model where every human being is, by default, disabled and cannot meet their daily needs without a mobility device. People have a relationship to their car more akin to a wheelchair than to a train. That's a problem.

Progressives think I'm right about the challenge, but many of them view egalitarian policy as a panacea. I like egalitarian policy! But I think they're wrong about the politics. We're witnessing the fruits of decades of effort to propagandize low-info voters, and need to blow it up or neutralize it.

You can be a “car guy” and not like car dependency. You can be a “car guy” and get that too many cars in cities is bad for everyone, including drivers. You can be a “car guy” and be tired of lies & manipulations like “the war on cars.” You can be a “car guy” and know more choice means more freedom.

This will have to count as my Supreme Court term review.

I make that point that there's no point in reviewing what the Supreme Court has done because the rule of law is dead in this country anyway.

My latest in @thenation.com
The Rule of Law Is Dead in the US
The rule of law presupposes that there are rules that provide a consistent, repeatable, and knowable set of outcomes. That’s no longer the case.

It is essential for the rule of law that everyone involved in this end up in prison. Nothing else is a sufficient deterrent against the intentional, repeated abuse of government power to systematically deny fundamental rights.

Right, so, let’s be clear what’s going on here. A handful of shameless hacks are hoping to cozy up to power by putting an academic gloss on Trump’s crackpot notions. This allows political actors to pretend the plain meaning of the Birthright Citizenship Clause is fiercely contested by legal scholars
