In the macro that’s absolutely true about gatekeeping etc. Stating that only jerks would care about this particular issue (as it’s a victimless crime) is (as far as I can tell) in direct conflict with the reality of situation.

I’m centering people with service animals, are you?
I have a dog (literally my display pic), whom I love. I promise you that this opinion isn’t just a vessel for my dislike of seeing dogs places.
December 7, 2025 at 12:42 AM
If true then everyone should be able to bring their dog everywhere a service animal is currently allowed.

FYI you’re giving off real Marjorie Knoller energy.

BTW this is something virtually every service dog organization has spoken on. www.usatoday.com/story/news/n...
'Doors are being shut': Fake service dogs hurt real service animals' credibility, advocates warn
Two thirds of service dog users say badly behaved fake service dogs negatively impact their independence and quality of life.

It’s complicated but this is probably federal jurisdiction. The feds operate the hydro dams and I believe the fisheries in the OR/WA section.
December 4, 2025 at 4:58 AM
I’m there as well, and yes.
December 4, 2025 at 4:37 AM
I feel like we’re both living in places where this kind of thing’s ubiquitous, and other people aren’t?
December 4, 2025 at 2:58 AM
Agreed.
December 3, 2025 at 6:43 PM
I’m not forcing anyone to do anything.
December 3, 2025 at 6:43 PM
I have to pay full fare for my toddler, and you can pay to have your dog transported most places. The actual accommodation in most cases is service animals traveling with you free of charge.
December 3, 2025 at 6:29 PM
That’s the question that was originally posed. All I said is that in the hypothetical where people were fragrantly violating this norm, I think the social impact isn’t limited to the act itself.
December 3, 2025 at 6:20 PM
I’m not though. In the hypothetical that did happen it would be antisocial behavior right?
December 3, 2025 at 6:16 PM
A significant number of people who indicate this will tell you that they just checked that because they wanted extra legroom, a bigger room etc.
December 3, 2025 at 6:09 PM
I coordinate group travel for a living and a large part of my job is accommodating people with disabilities. Am working on the labyrinth of paperwork regarding bringing a service animal to Australia currently. When people indicate that they need accommodation, have dietary needs etc we reach out.
December 3, 2025 at 6:07 PM
Using disability accommodations when you don’t have a disability would be antisocial behavior, no?
December 3, 2025 at 5:46 PM
Hence why I said worse outcomes for everyone involved. I don’t know what you think we’re arguing about. These sorts of norms being load bearing and important is completely consistent with any theory of police abolition etc.
December 3, 2025 at 5:30 PM
As it should. To expand on my original point (of which this was but an example), these sorts of norms are load bearing and when they fail the alternatives inevitably become a more formalized system of enforcement which is a way worse outcome.
December 3, 2025 at 5:11 PM
Yes, I bring my dog to Home Depot and it was a great place to socialize him as a puppy.
December 3, 2025 at 4:48 PM
My point was the whole structure here relies on people not lying, because doing so is antisocial and shameful. My contention is that the violation of this social convention is happening with increased frequency, which you’re free to disagree with.
December 3, 2025 at 4:02 PM
I didn’t, that’s my point. I’m not talking about a singular incident, it’s that this is ubiquitous at my local grocery store for example. Have seen obviously untrained dogs lunging at people etc.
December 3, 2025 at 3:27 PM
My point wasn’t that we need more enforcement, the opposite in fact. It’s that our society is built upon things like being able to take it at face value when someone says they have a disability.
December 3, 2025 at 3:19 PM
Yes, I think the post you’re replying to says that explicitly.
December 3, 2025 at 2:49 PM
No issue with it at all, this was just in the context of people seeking accommodation and how the abuse of that has made things harder for those who need it.
A significant part of my job’s organizing international travel for people with disabilities.
