"hot," atsumu declares. the entire gym falls silent. all eyes turn to him, watching his cheeks grow impossibly red. inunaki snickers. “want to repeat that for the class?”

Suna finally returns to his apartment with heavy feet. The sky is dark, flickering streetlights casting shadows over the street. He unlocks his door, drops his duffle on the genkan, places the cloth bag of leftovers next to it. As he turns to lock the door again, he notices the mail stuffed in his mailbox, and flips through them, inspecting the names beneath the tiny light. One is addressed to him without a return address. Frowning, he uses his key to slice it open, unfolding the letter within. It’s from his father.

By the time Osamu returns with a water bottle, he’s upright, massaging his wrist. He takes the bottle with his other hand, lets the cool liquid trickle down his throat. Osamu sits again, careful to keep distance between them. “Are ya gonna look into therapy again?” His inquiry is quiet. “Probably not.” “Why not?” He shrugs. “Don’t think I’ll have time for it.” His therapist asked if he needed a referral, wasn’t surprised when he refused. After three years of therapy and two folders full of handouts and printouts, surely he’s better equipped to handle his anxiety and trauma? Probably not, his traitorous mind whispers. He learned how to silence it, didn’t hear it until the end of third year, days after he left his therapist’s office for the last time, saddled with too many deadlines and not enough time to fulfill them. Sure, he managed, in the end, at the sacrifice of his sleep and sanity. Osamu releases a noisy breath beside him. “All right, if ya want. Just…don’t keep it all in. Ya can rely on me. S’why ya trust me, right?” “Yeah, I know.” He lowers the bottle and reaches forward, arms open for a hug. Osamu doesn’t hesitate to reciprocate. “I know.” He repeats it again to himself, for good measure. I know.

Suna steps into his therapist’s office one last time. It’s furnished with bookshelves stuffed with heavy medical textbooks, framed photographs arranged on the top shelf. A desk is in front of the window, curtains pushed aside to reveal the early spring afternoon, gnarled tree branches adorned by baby buds, waiting to blossom. A rack by the door holds a jacket and scarf, along with an umbrella. Framed certificates hang on the cream-colored walls, forming a triangle, with the master’s degree at the top. Genma-sensei sits on her armchair, a bright yellow eyesore with a throw cushion against the small of her back. She smiles at him, eyes glittering behind her green wireframes. “Suna-kun, thank you for joining me one last time. Congratulations on your finish in the spring tournament, by the way.” “Hi, Sensei.” He adds his coat to the rack, takes a seat beside her on the chaise lounge chair, a calm white to contrast its brighter companion. “Thanks. It isn’t that great.” “Inarizaki is the fourth strongest team in the country. That is a title to uphold with honor.” She is empty-handed, elbows propped on her lap, ringed fingers intertwined. “How did it feel to play your last high school tournament?”

i've been trying to write a fic for deaf atsumu for ages and i think i finally got my foundation for it
If everyone hears the world at a normal level, Atsumu hears it with the volume turned low. This is apparent from the moment he steps onto the court. Everything that excites him about volleyball – the cheers, the whistles, the squeaky shoes, the skin-on-leather contact – is turned down, leaving him in a vacuum where any thread of sound slips from his grasp. Players shout at each other, too muffled and quick to process. The cheer squads’ chants are lost to thundering cheer sticks and megaphones. Even the whistles aren’t as loud, quieter and shorter. The only way Atsumu can tell if a rally starts or ends is when the players circle up for quick high-fives or prepare to receive a serve. It's because of Osamu that he’s hard of hearing. Damn glutton stole all his nutrients in the womb.

A flood of affection rushes through him. I wanna take him on a date. "Eh?" Blink. His eyes slide toward Atsumu, whose teeth are buried in his popsicle, golden gaze wide. They stare at each. A beat. Then– "I said that aloud, didn't I." It isn’t a question. Osamu swallows the rest of his mochi before tossing the wrapper in the garbage. “Ya did.” Atsumu snaps his bite of popsicle off. “Yer not gonna let this go, will ya.” “Nope.” He licks the stick clean. Sorry! The tiny kanji reads. Try again next time! “Don’t worry, we’ll help ya plan the perfect date with Sunarin.”

when he was a kid, suna wanted to be on tv. he watched a lot of it, thanks to absent parents, everything from reality sitcoms, detective dramas, medical documentaries, cooking shows. he watched celebrities face their darkest fears, ordinary citizens fall in love, actors cry about their dead families, late night hosts crack jokes and make commentary that went over his adolescent head. after his sister was born, he was forced to sit through kids’ shows, educational programs, and shojo anime, but regardless of what was on screen, he retained a singular wish: to be on tv.
