I had forgotten that Harari describes all ideologies as "natural law" religions. Even if you wanted to say that ideologies are just other sorts of religion, calling them all "natural law" obscures their metaphysical basis. Especially liberalism which is explicitly not based on the state of nature.

Max Stirner's worst enemy is Yuval Noah Harari. Harari recognizes that spooks are parasitic on the human mind and limit human freedom. He recognizes that they are human, often cynical, constructs. Yet he asserts it is imperative to propagate them, that they are the only tool of human flourishing.

Of course it was a Reagan era relaxation of regulations that made stock price no longer related in any way to profitability. Stock buybacks are just so atrociously bad for the health of industry

I don't understand why these pundits think left wing policies are unpopular. In 2020 every democratic candidate was pushed into supporting health care reform with most supporting a single payer system. Sure they all forgot about that immediately, but when a real primary happens voters push left.

Neither of these people is a conservative but it seems to me they are both accepting a conservative mythology of the past and our nature as essentially proto-fascist and fascist-legitimizing.

Samantha did something similar when she characterized indigenous land claims as Nazi ideology.
a decent article from the dreaded noah on how a blut und boden nationalism has come to cloak itself in the language of "decolonization" and "indigenous land"

No, you are not on Indigenous land

I simply don't care if some people take advantage of social spending. I'd rather give money to a hundred scammers than not and see a single child go hungry.
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

werner herzog: the korok says “i need to reach my friend,” but i see not friendship here. instead i see the cruel jungle, i see abandonment, one left behind, struggling to move, like a turtle on its back, baking in the hyrule sun. “oooh” it cries out in anguish. “aaha.”

I support lots of diversity in film, but for partially self serving reasons. I'm just face blind enough that I can't tell a lot of middle aged white guys apart. It would really help me if actors all looked extremely different from one another.

What's up with directors making movies about how dangerous conspiracy theories are for both individuals and society at large which then end with the conspiracies all being true?
It is both hack and obvious and also completely undercuts the message.

Watching Bad Lieutenant. Can confirm that's a really bad lieutenant

Party Time by The Northern Boys is one of the greatest songs about the unity of the death drive and the pleasure principle ever made. Self destruction exactly through the symbolic act of creation.

I wish the people who invented cryptocurrency understood economics better. Decentralized currency is genuinely a good idea, but there are two things that were missed. First, money should be quick and easy to spend. More importantly, you don't want a currency to be radically deflationary!

There is some fun irony that the quest for immortality in the face of death provides meaning to a seemingly large number of people's lives. A meaning which would rapidly disappear if the quest was ever successful.

I don't think I've ever been in a more welcoming space than a filk (the i isn't a typo) convention. It's amazing to walk into a room filled with older folks you've never met before and have them all light up with joy that someone new is there to share music with them.

It's worth noting, the far left and the far right occasionally do think more similarly to each other than to liberals when it comes to international relations. But that's generally because they both have something like a realist view of IR. Liberals don't like thinking about naked power relations.
I think it's a mistake to look at this particular case for proof of a horseshoe. Neither the left nor silicone valley capitalists have a unified view on China. Fear of Chinese competition is a large part of the alliance between parts of silicon valley and the Trump administration.
🧲 We’re seeing the horseshoe event horizon when the lefties cheering on China because they see it as a counterforce against the US align with the Silicon Valley tech titans high on China as an advanced Sino-topian techno-surveillance state.
