6/ 🧵 Implications:
This challenges assumptions about the intergenerational transmission of educational advantages. More nuanced, context-specific studies are needed to fully understand these dynamics.

5/ 🔍 Takeaway:
- For 8-15-year-olds in Germany, grandparental involvement does not significantly influence school grades.
- Grandparental involvement might matter more for younger children, focusing less on academics and more on emotional or practical support.

4/ 🏫 Heterogeneity Check:
We tested whether children from advantaged families benefit more due to their grandparents' resources. Result? No consistent evidence supporting this "positive selection" hypothesis.
francemente.bsky.social
3/ 📊 Results:
- Grandparental childcare: Slight positive effect disappears after adjusting for family background.
- Frequent contact & financial transfers: No significant impact on grades.

2/ 🧩 Key Question:
Does grandparental involvement improve grades in Mathematics & German?
Methods: We used advanced treatment effect analyses, accounting for family socioeconomic characteristics to avoid biases.

There’s a debate to be had about reforming the academic peer review system. At #ESR, I see real improvements in article quality thanks to reviewers' feedback. But the process places a heavy burden on editors, reviewers and authors. And I agree, perhaps we do submit and publish too much.

It seems that there was no Sociology Journals starter pack, so we created one: go.bsky.app/93ta3Gs -- do let us know which journals we missed!

I feel like this was the greatest celebrity post of all time because you initially want to make fun of it because we’re all irony poisoned jerks but the sheer scale of human compassion overwhelms it and you end up going yes Vincent I also want to help a pig see the stars for the first time

Pigs can't look up. But I could pick a pig up one night and raise it into the sky and tilt this pig ever so gentle. I can make sure
this pigs eyes line up with the stars. Imagine seeing the stars 4the first time.l want 2b treated that kindly and
see the stars for the first time.

Someone recently posted a link to a livecam of a watering hole in a park in Namibia and it reminded me that when I could only see my students on zoom during COVID, I made them a long list of animal livecams to help their brains. This seems like a good time to re-share it! Enjoy, I hope it helps.
