Next week at the #GSA2025, I'll be presenting my newly developed Python tool, 𝒑𝒚𝑪𝒐𝒓𝒆𝑹𝒆𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓. We apply it to quantitatively re-examine the correlatability of Cascadia deep-water turbidites, previously interpreted as synchronous deposits of paleo-earthquakes.

Planetary geology folks, section meetings for GSA are in the spring. Smaller, but cheaper than a half week of LPSC, posters double the size, talks 17 minutes, abstracts 345 words. Come meet some of your local colleagues!

(LPSC was my first meeting, I love going - but hate what it has become.)
Planetary scientists - we have a continual lament that goes like, waaah we have too many meetings how can we work and put in so many abstracts! Here's a solution! Choose a different meeting!
It's really disheartening to try to talk to colleagues about boycotting a conference that removed all its records of abstracts pertaining to DEI, only for the response to largely be "I don't want to go, but..." But what??? Each of us has agency! You can choose not to go!

Thinking far in advance of LPSC 2026 but I do think that a wider, organized boycott would be a very interesting and effective strategy! And it could be fun to organize some counter-programming for those of us boycotting. Maybe "present your favorite LPI-removed abstract" 😂

Terra is of the missions that this administration wants to terminate as it eliminates Earth science from NASA. Gosh I dunno, but it kinda seems like maybe we want more of these satellites, not less? 🤔
A couple unlucky missed areas, but this is an animated GIF of Terra/MODIS images showing Hurricane Erin spin up from 8/12-8/16.

🚨New Paper Alert!🚨
I've got a new paper out in Science Advances where we show that the 2 byr old Chang'e 5 magma came from shallow depths in the lunar mantle, and that melting was likely driven by top-down heating of the mantle by radioactive decay in a sub-crustal KREEP layer.
⚒️🧪🔭
Check it out:
A shallow mantle source for the Chang’e 5 lavas reveals how top-down heating prolonged lunar magmatism
The chemistry of the youngest lunar lavas and experiments show how the mantle stayed hot enough to melt for billions of years.
