Not sure about everyone else, but I’m encouraged today (elated?) that we learned last night that we can beat candidates/parties of bullshit, AI slop, corruption, and authoritarianism without emulating them and without tacking towards a false center between us and them.

To become dependent on ChapGPT is to evacuate yourself from your own life.

YIKES, no thanks. I’m gonna be alive inside every damn thing I do, even and especially the ish I don’t wanna do.

Here, I present an issue made up of work that speaks to the gentle intimacy of beverage, and to the things that keep us human. I hope it feels like a warm cup from my hands to yours.

The entire Republican Party has lined up solidly behind a would-be fascist dictator with a narcissistic psychopathic personality disorder. But the real problem is that Democrats spent too long backing a president who often looked and sounded old.

An extraordinary story about how scientists in the US are afraid to speak up as the entire science research ecosystem is demolished at the hands of the Republican administration.

Without our voices, how will people understand the scope and generational consequences of the ongoing destruction?
“The lived experience of a scientist right now is terrifying”

My colleague Warren Cornwall spoke to @gregggonsalves.bsky.social, @rebekahtromble.bsky.social, @katestarbird.bsky.social
and others about “the fear and self-censorship coursing through the nation’s scientific establishment today”.

Crushing to hear of more junior colleagues in the computer science & human-computer interaction (HCI) space whose NSF CAREER grants were terminated this week. I'm hopeful that philanthropic funders can find a way to support this generation of scientists studying online manipulation, bias in AI, etc.

UPDATE: We have data on >1000 terminated #NSF grants at grant-watch.us. Thanks to all who have been contributing data the past few days.

We've also added a "Reports" section with some analyses. For NSF, we see that the STEM education directorate has been absolutely pummeled.

The NYT wants you to think universities became dependent on government. This is false.

The government invested in the national research infrastructure by competitive grants to universities. The taxpayers built this. It got us to the moon. Won the Cold War. Created Silicon Valley. Made the McRib.

I wrote about this a bit in my last book but it really shakes me that a defining feature of this catastrophic era is that we just keep going to work. We work through pandemics, we work through natural disasters, we work through economic calamity, we work through coups, we work, we work, we work.
