We stood in solidarity with Harm Reduction Advocacy Collective and its efforts to represent some of the most vulnerable Torontonians—people who would be pushed even further to the sidelines of society with the anti-shelter and anti-harm-reduction policies the opposing coalition is proposing.
fridaysforfutureto.org
Other outlets that ended up having to acknowledge our opposition include the CBC, Radio Canada and The Star.

This would not have been possible without our supporters who showed up even on a sunny Tuesday morning for cyclists, transit riders, homeless individuals and harm-reduction site users.

Toronto Today quoted Paul Macchiusi, one of the speakers at the press conference, admitting our presence held the group back from spreading its narrative.

The article divides the money-backed narrative of the opposing coalition and our people-backed narrative.

The group, which is known to use its influence and financial resources to appear larger and more grassroots than it actually is, expected to hold a press conference with zero opposition and to have its views published in the media unchallenged.

Thanks to our intervention, that didn't happen.

We protested a press conference organized by the "Toronto Concerned Citizens Coalition" this morning showcasing a disappointing assortment of anti-progress viewpoints including opposition to bike lanes, bus lanes, homeless shelters and harm-reduction sites.

A group of high-profile individuals, including a Balance on Bloor rep, will be holding a press conference Tuesday where they'll advocate against bike lanes, bus lanes and more.

We'll be there to remind them of how unpopular and out-of-touch their views are.
Bike & bus lane counterprotest against out-of-touch reactionaries fighting for a worse Toronto.

Who they are:
The group “Toronto Concerned Citizens Coalition” is made up of out-of-touch, high-profile individuals using their influence and media connections to host a press conference trying to block progressive policies that improve our lives. Their agenda is:
- anti-cyclist
- anti-transit
- anti-environment
- anti-affordable housing
- anti-Indigenous
- anti-people
- pro-car centrism
- pro-criminalizing homelessness
- pro-pollution
- pro-exploitation
- pro-colonialism
- pro-inequality

Our demand to these businesses: drop the lawsuit against the City of Toronto attempting to force the removal of our bike lanes, and stop lobbying Doug Ford to rip apart our biking infrastructure.
fridaysforfutureto.org
Earlier today, almost 50 cyclists joined us to protest several dozen businesses along Bloor near Royal York involved in the anti-bike-lane movement.

We've placed stickers in the area with a list of alternatives we're asking local residents to shop at.

Press release at fridaysforfutureto.org.

We're holding a protest against specific businesses we've identified as having significant ties to the anti-bike-lane movement.

We continue to support local businesses that are not contributing to the deaths of cyclists.

We hope to see you there, July 5 at High Park!

Our statement re: the ongoing fires in Manitoba 👇
Fridays for Future Toronto expresses solidarity with Manitobans as a devastating wildfire spreads through their province.

While we are not in a position to speculate on the original cause of this specific fire, it is clear that decades of deliberate inaction and human-caused climate change have led to adverse weather effects occurring at unprecedented rates. Politicians may forget, but the planet doesn’t. We welcome the immediate actions announced by the Manitoba government to evacuate areas considered in danger as well as the intervention of the Canadian Armed Forces. These are necessary actions to minimize the damage this wildfire poses to human life, as well as the broader ecosystem we’re a part of.

We must act with a similar urgency to address the root cause of the continent-wide increase in wildfires each year. We cannot continue allowing giant corporations to spew carbon dioxide and destroy our planet to satiate their insatiable thirst for profit, nor can we count on them to set standards for mitigating the damage they have willingly caused. We call on Canadian governments at all levels as well as governments across the world to keep true to their climate promises by phasing out our reliance on fossil fuels, moving on from the car-centric societal model of the 20th century, and switching to cleaner sources of energy including solar, wind and nuclear.

We call on them to do this before it’s too late.

Bill 212 Charter Challenge: Bike Lane Removals Temporarily Halted

Statement from Fridays for Future Toronto --> Fridays for Future Toronto welcomes the Ontario Superior Court of Justice’s decision banning the province from removing Toronto’s bike lanes until a final decision is made on the application. Having access to safe, accessible and efficient bike lanes is particularly important to young people. Whether this is because they’re too young to get a driver’s license, because they can’t afford a car, or simply because they want a healthy, environmentally friendly mode of transportation, many young individuals find cycling the most well-suited means to get around. They feel empowered by the autonomy and independence cycling gives them. Youths also stand to be the most impacted by climate change stemming from carbon emissions as they inherit a world riddled with greenhouse gases and other atmospheric pollutants. Cycling is one of the most energy-efficient mode of transportation and every single bicycle is a potential carbon-emitting vehicle taken off the road.

(5/5) The Ontario Society of Professional Engineers recognized that #Bill212 was a wrong step for our future. #Stantec, why are you helping to implement it? Read our full letter to Stantec and sign the @cycletoronto.bsky.social "Shame on you, Stantec" campaign: www.cycleto.ca/shame_on_you...

(THREAD: 1/5) #Engineers have a duty to keep society safe, symbolized by the iron ring received by Canadian engineering graduates. Why, then, is #Stantec working with #ONgov to rip up #yyz bike lanes, given that the province’s own files show that doing so will endanger lives?
