That would be Takuzo Nagano! He didn’t work on every game from what I understand, but you are correct in that he worked on Layton as well.

He also did a fair amount of work on Yokai Watch

-because of the sense that they are made of real places and real things.

Fossilized Wonders texturework is... fine. I don't like it, but it works.

But, there is no sense of place, no sense of purpose, no sense of the almost collage-esque arrangement the games before had.

It's disheartening.

I guess, in a way that identity has always been that the games have always had a visual identity rooted in usage of photography and a keen sense of framing.

Despite the lower visual fidelity of its backgrounds compared to other games, the backgrounds have always been visually captivating-

Yes, I get that he is only making textures and then using them the same way that he used stock photos, but it feels so cheap and careless.

The appearance of LOLK's Sea of Tranquility in stage 5 feels like a slap to the face after how much of the game's texture work lacks the series' identity.

The composition, the scale, the usage of negative space, the sense of place, all of it in service of some of the most well-composed stage backgrounds in any STG series.

It's so disheartening to see the construction material of stock and royalty free images be used this well, and then disregarded.

I have been thinking a lot about Touhou backgrounds following the ZUN interview about why he used AI in 20. It makes me angry in a way that is really hard to articulate.

I couldn't help but remember just how many of the stage backgrounds in the series are genuinely breathtaking.

Letty Whiterock is no laughing matter

She has killed millions with her 冬符「フラワーウィザラウェイ」
And you don't even want to know the hell she's inflicted on the survivors

Honestly, at that point I’d just just watch Durarara or Baccano

I liked it a lot when I was younger, but it’s very much at its strongest for like the first 3-5 episodes.

Everything after becomes decreasingly about leveraging the idea in unique ways, and increasingly like a dozen side characters hastily vying for your attention.
