Today, we are debating an issue that is dividing Finnish society and is topical across Europe: how to deal with the need for increased immigration and the concomitant issue of language skills of immigrants. The debate will use inclusive bilingualism in English and Finnish.

Is there any alternative to the gamification of academic metrics?
Drawing on discussions with academics who have oriented their work around public engagement and social impact, Daniel Pearson suggests these academics present an opportunity to rethink the existing…

Universities all over Europe are cutting language programs and closing the doors to the world. We want to get a more complete picture: where, when, why?
If you know of any such cases, please tell us (and share the link with your language and linguistics contacts)!

Threats to academic systems are not uniquely Dutch. Across the globe, we see regimes dismantling those equipped to critique them, disrupting the cosmopolitan academic space that resists nationalist and xenophobe policymaking. This calls for solidarity and even more cosmopolitan worldviews! 4/

A most convincing case for case!
Joke that does not work in Finnishm although we also have a female name Helmi ('pearl'). Possessive would be Helmin, or adverbial would be helmiltä or kuin helmet.

This is why it is advisable to have cases that differentiate syntactic funtions! 😁

APCs cause over-production of papers, because journals get paid per paper. And even PLOS says this model is broken. ⤵️
bsky.app/profile/hans...

My take (and some context) on why even these light/bon-existant details are actually quite big. PLOS publicly taking a position that APCs as a model doesn't work is quite a signal to the broader #AcademicPublishing system.
There's been some interest in this PLOS announcement, so despite it being light on details, here's why it's big. In our recent study 'The strain on scientific publishing' we showed how certain groups took off in total articles published.

Why? And why now?
