Also Bryce Miller is the only M’s SP who had a down year, and he had arm trouble throughout the season. Gilbert & Kirby had injuries but wound up w/ 3.35 and 3.37 FIP. Woo took a step up & made the All-Star team w/ Muñoz. Castillo‘s 3.88 FIP is about as expected at this point.

Fingers is credited with 0.3 fWAR, because he had a 3.63 FIP, but BRef gives him -1.3 rWAR because of a 4.52 ERA, 5.06 RA/9

Until it’s time to hire a manager, anyway

He was 11th-AL in fWAR, including Skubal & Crochet, and wound up 11th in the vote. But I‘m still surprised that 16/30 writers left him off their ballots. Maybe because he played in just 126 games (a consideration in the voting rules) or because the team was bad even before the deadline trades.

Man, how sorry were the ‘79 Padres? Winfield posted 7.8 fWAR, and they had Gene Tenace putting up 5.4 fWAR at Catcher, and they still won only 68 games.

Winfield wuz robbed (he had the highest fWAR and wRC+)

But the voting rules do instruct voters to consider intangibles, “general character, disposition, loyalty and effort.” How much extra effort does the Catcher position require relative to RF? If fWAR is fairly close, I’d say the added responsibilities & effort should tip the scales.

Culturally, is there any difference?

Ironic, if you think about it, that Aaron’s favorite baseball team dresses in pickle-green. God’s little joke.

Nobody knew about WAR then, but according to either version of WAR, Griffey was the best player in the league in 1996. The Seattle writers were right, even if they arrived there for the wrong reason. But then, if they really just disliked A-Rod, who can blame them, now?

Is Staten Island pretty much New Jersey?

Maybe a good fit for the M’s at 3B?

Do you particularly like any of the players coming over from Japan or South Korea this year?

Or a college basketball coach. Someone else could do the real coaching and drawing up plays, but let Pete run up and down the sideline with a towel.

“Potato pancakes”

It’s OK (although my wife really disliked the food), but Carl’s Jr. or Jack in the Box are better. I think Californians hype it just out of provincial pride.

Just as a white man with a beard, I’m usually pulled aside so they can go through my bag. Last time, waiting in ticket area, I was questioned on whether I actually had a flight, and who I was with. An agent once scolded me for walking thru the metal detector before she waved me forward. TSA sucks.

At 40.6 fWAR thru age 35, he needs at least another 15 fWAR for consideration, probably 20 and some more postseason heroics for a good chance. Which means playing like an All-Star until he's 40. In the last 5 seasons, he's posted 4+ fWAR just twice. So it seems unlikely.

I finally had a chance to try it last year, surprised to find it was a basic burger stand menu, made fresh but also pretty bland; the fries were soggy and the meat patties are about as thin as McD's. The Bob Melvin of burger spots.
