okay the hurricane is happening the whole time during the intro but still, going from "the ground is solid with no flooding" to "ah shit my house is going down the river with my mom still inside it" feels like a very fast acceleration to happen offscreen during one short conversation

I took a break from Star Rail so it's been a while since I last saw Aventurine. My first reaction when they turned around was "oh she's hot"

wow Alan Wake 2 has a lesbian AND a gay man. And even a stereotypical toxic bisexual!
Dr. Casper Darling, a returning character from Remedy's previous game Control, getting seduced by Thomas Zane in a NG+ exclusive FMV. The seduction aspect isn't explicit but it's very, very, VERY strongly implied, with Zane touching Darling's chest and talking about how he must work out, handing him a drink, proposing they team up, and then putting his arms around Darling's shoulders. Zane's the "toxic bisexual" here, as he also had a woman as a love interest in Alan Wake 1, although who knows how sincere either of these supposed romantic connections are for him. He's first and foremost a sleazy manipulator type character. Like all bisexuals. /j

I think we can allll agree being able to do dumb shit like this makes playing a video game at a low framerate completely worth it
Alan Wake 2. The protagonist is made to stand hip deep in a pool of water, and the camera pointed at where her ankles would be, so the surface of the water takes up most of the image. All that's visible in the water is a rough image of the sky. Same as before but with path tracing turned on. The protagonist is properly reflected in the water she's standing in, as well as the boardwalk and town behind her that would be otherwise cut off by the top of the camera.

lol I just noticed in that ray tracing screenshot the sink is super weird. I left the room and came back in and that fixed it. Bug of changing graphics options without letting the game think about it I guess.

The real big obvious thing that I find it hard to ignore is how bad the mirrors look without the path tracing tbh
Alan Wake 2, without ray tracing. The game looks fine except there's a mirror in the center of the screen that is, for some reason, instead of showing the bathroom it's in shows the clouds in the sky above a black ground. It looks very wrong and weird. Alan Wake 2 with ray tracing, same scene except the mirror actually works and you can see the room and the protagonist's face reflected in the mirror like you'd expect. But it's running at 60% the speed of before.

I can't believe how fast I've fallen down the rabbithole of "I don't need high performance the game needs to look pretty" now that I've upgraded from a nine year old GPU to a seven year old GPU. The relatively small differences in these two images really got me going 'yeah I'll play at 30fps sure'
Alan Wake 2, with regular rendering. It's getting 60fps with my GPU only at 75% load. The graphics look really good, the only thing that sticks out is weird is Saga not having a visible shadow. Alan Wake 2, with path traced lighting and reflections turned on. It's running about half as fast, but there's a lot of little details that looks better, and Saga has a shadow.

oh I should probably justify calling him straight: The common monsters representing female peers (the ones I think of as "maidens") are both scary and sexy. The "mother" and "crone" female enemies are less so, and the male enemies are exclusively just monstrous and scary.
The most common enemy in the game. It appears to be a combination of a woman's body and a puppet, perhaps a woman's body turned into a puppet. She only sometimes has a face, and when she does it's typically a mask not actually attached to her. Frequently ingame she's grey instead of flesh-tone, and sometimes also red and covered in flowers. A puppet woman who's pale white and seemingly turned partially to wood, or perhaps was always made out of wood. She looks old fashioned in her face. A male enemy that crawls on all fours and leaps at Hinako, barking like a dog and drooling. He's missing the top half of his head instead of the front of it, implying his brain was taken instead of his identity. Hinako's journal describes these enemies as creeps who try to get close to women but ignore men. a large blob of flesh and plants, with a large knife sticking out to one side. Represents Hinako's father.

The Silent Hill f concept art is great
Concept art for an enemy standing on human-sized puppet legs but with an upper body made up out countless doll arms and heads mashed together. A small canal crowded by what appears to be hastily put together sheet metal buildings, with stairs down to the water and multiple bridges across it. a very skewed view of an old fashioned school hallway. So The Caligula Effect 2 was recommended to be as a feminist/LGBT positive game but uh just did a side quest where a teenage girl was accusing her teacher of sexual abuse and it turns out she was lying and he was innocent. And then afterwards I got his character profile and it said this. Wtf?

My most frustrating moment related to this recently: noticing that your character animations in Cyberpunk 2077 are almost entirely unchanged and were clearly designed assuming a male player character first, thus even though you're allowed to play as a woman and wear a dress, she'll sit like this

She's even still wearing the pin that Kotoyuki gave her to claim her as his property, the pin the real Hinako discarded at a shrine to trigger this ending. Real Hinako responds to her Fox self saying this by going "yeah uh I'm gonna find something else to do... something not that."
Fox Hinako: "To live with such passion... that I might actually propose to Kotoyuki." Hinako: "I also want to put my heart into something."
