Love this thing, but alas, it sports lacklustre performance in-game

I've snooped around a bit more, and this guy has a simpler setup that could maybe get the results you want:

Giving this some extra thought: you might want to combine the above technique with your painted textures. Between the colour ramp and the output node, I'd add a Mix Colour node set to multiply; into one knob would go the texture map, on the other the shader setup.

Hmmmm.
I wonder if using a toon-like shader would allow you have the softness of the unlit version whilst also having it react to light?

Scorp, it is no exaggeration to say this is one of the best designs I've ever seen. Absolutely nailed the TMP look while doing something wholly new.

I rather like the mental image of Pundus' avatar just opening his mouth like a Pez Dispenser, rummaging inside with cartoon rattling sound effects, and just producing entire starships somehow.

Alex, dude, not cool inciting self-harm like this, man...
[Obs.: Joke(?)]

It is a work of art, that's what it is

Seconded, it's just a fantastically well-put together game, irrespective of IP.
It's borderline criminal they are being forced to take it down.

Elite: Dangerous being so high on your list comes as a (positive) surprise to me!
Hope I can someday stumble into you out there in the black 😁

Have them in millimetre-sized spheres in canisters, and maybe, just maybe, we can have Traveller's Sandcasters...

... probably not, but one sure can hope!

Fun Fact: this is arguably the most prominent ship design so far not designed by me, but rather by our very talented @ethanleroith.com.
He'd been doing many "background" ship designs already, but this is the first "big name" ship he designed, and he nailed the assignment!

Not to mention authorial intent by the modeller was for it to he a smaller ship.

And besides, we have enough enormous ships already – where are all the patrol boats, picket ships, shore protection vessels?

Small ships deserve love too!

Bridge and rollbar, hands-down.

The Nacelles aren't even actual Excelsior nacelles; they're two excelsior nacelle *undersides* glued to make a single nacelle.
Easier to accept a different nacelle type than gargantuan windows/docking ports/torpedo launchers.
