Love logging into a website and clicking “remember me”, then coming back later and having it be like “wtf? Who the hell are you?!” Perfect. Wonderful. No notes 🙃

Hi everyone! I'm currently looking for participants for interviews for my PhD research. I'm working on the history of the LGBT+ community in rural Ireland, the way being in rural Ireland impacted the community and how the community impacted rural Ireland, 1970-2000.

I’ll be forever mad that use of the em dash has become a “telltale sign” of GenAI responses. As someone who frequently uses the em dash - and has since before GenAI was a thing - it feels like it’s muscling in on my turf. Back off, robot! The em dash is mine!

I’m delighted to have unknowingly carried on the long and proud tradition of Donegal people coming to Galway to get degrees in the university. If you’re from Donegal and interested in history, then it’s really your duty to do the MAH in UofG! Sorry, I don’t make the rules.

The top 5 of my Spotify Wrapped this year was the Pet Shop Boys’ “Go West” and then all Broadway musical soundtracks, so I may have some news for my wife’s gender identity.

I remember learning about the Age of Exploration in secondary school and just being in awe at the idea that an Atlantic crossing went from being a months-long gruelling endeavour to something you could do in a few hours in relative comfort. Dunno why exactly, but I was hooked from then on.

Dear fellow historians: I recently asked my undergraduate students what sparked their interest in studying history. Two of them mentioned the film Titanic! Now I'm curious (and will let them know): What sparked your interest in studying #history?

No guarantee of destruction, but depends on the dog. I’d say crate training is definitely worth it, as is having a healthy stockpile of small training treats. Also, make sure to get them used to common household noises early (hoovers, hairdryers, blenders, etc).

Bluesky academics, let's get to know each other! Quote this & tell me: 1) a project you are working on & 2) an odd idea/theory you aren't working on but keep thinking about.

1) Queer Irish emigration in late c.20 London
2) History of Irish “alternative sexualities” (BDSM, polamory, swinging, etc)

Labour will still be getting a transfer from me, but it’ll be a low one. I don’t believe they’ll actually deliver on any promises, happy as they are to prop up a coalition with bigger (centre-)right parties. But they’re preferable to the far-right who would be all too happy to deliver on theirs.
gallenator85.bsky.social
I said I would like to see a commitment from Labour to rule out coalition with FF/FG. The response? They’ll need to wait until after the election to see how the numbers shake out. Which, like, that’s the entire problem! Do you not see that? How does that inspire confidence for progressive voters?
gallenator85.bsky.social
It was for a Labour candidate too, which made the whole thing sit even worse. I’ve come to expect this from FF and FG candidates, but when I see smaller parties doing it - especially (nominally) left wing parties - I can’t help but feel a little saddened. Your policies are popular! Lean into them!
gallenator85.bsky.social
Like, isn’t part of this whole process having conversations on the doors with voters? If you’re in such a hurry to get away and don’t want to actually talk policy, then why not just send leaflets out in the post? Or better yet, don’t even bother leafleting at all and save on waste.
gallenator85.bsky.social
Just had some canvassers for #GE24 call to the house. They didn’t knock, just tried to quietly post their leaflet in the letterbox. I managed to catch them before they moved on, and it really felt like they didn’t want to be chatting at all. What’s the point in canvassing, so?
