Welcome

This was the first cemetery photo I ever took - Stanley Cemetery, Tasmania. Three weathered crosses, standing watch over the sea, quietly invited me into a world of memory, history, and stillness. That moment became the beginning of Gardens of the Silent.

Thanks for visiting.

Kev
Three weathered stone crosses stand in the foreground of Stanley Cemetery, Tasmania, overlooking a calm blue sea and distant green headland.

The late afternoon light casts soft shadows across the graves, blending the solemnity of remembrance with the serenity of the coastal landscape.

A photograph showing a cluster of gravestones in a cemetery. In the center is a tall, white marble headstone with a rounded top.

It stands on a rough-hewn stone base. Flanking this central stone are two large, plain grey stones, one to the left is an unadorned arch, and one to the right is a simple curve.

In the foreground, a dark, angled stone plaque rests on the ground. The area is bordered by low concrete and rough iron fencing, with pink flowers and dense green foliage filling the background.

A dramatic, black and white, low angle photograph of a crucifix atop a headstone, signed by Bron Peirce.

The marble cross, featuring the figure of Christ (corpus), stands silhouetted against a bright, cloudy sky, with light breaking through the clouds behind it.

Below the cross, two small dove sculptures rest on the tombstone's top edge. Two tall, dark cypress trees flank the cross, drawing the eye upward. The image has a solemn and ethereal quality.

That cemetery had a lot of historical markers in it for the early settlers in the area. The Colonist refers to the voluntary settlers. I have seen Colonist on quite a few gravestones in different areas in South Australia. I haven't see it elsewhere.

A close up, centered photograph of a small, rectangular marble cemetery plaque.

The weathered white and gray-veined stone is set against a rough-cut stone and concrete base. The inscription is clear: "In Loving Memory of Our Brother Samuel East. Died 2ND June 1947. Aged 77 Years."

The top edge of the stone is slightly curved. Behind the stone setting, there is a narrow strip of grass and dirt visible.

A middle ground photograph of a cemetery headstone. The main marker is a tall, ornate, Gothic-style white marble stone dedicated to William Mitchell, "Beloved Husband of Emily Gregory," who died May 28, 1889, aged 40 years.

A rusty, wrought-iron railing surrounds the base of the grave. To the left is an older stone cross on a raised pedestal, and to the right, the edge of another, darker stone is visible.

The background is filled with dense green shrubs and the dark, twisting branches of trees under a cloudy sky.

A weathered, light colored marble tombstone stands in a dry, grassy field, surrounded by tall, sun-bleached grass.

The headstone is topped with a simple cross and is etched with German text. A rusted, ornate metal railing with decorative finials surrounds the base of the grave.

In the blurred background, a wooden post, a dead tree, and a barbed-wire fence under a pale sky suggest a remote or rural location.

The inscription reads, in part: "Hier ruhet in Gott" (Here rests in God), "Mein geliebtes Kind" (My beloved child), "FRIEDRICH ERNST NAYDA," "Geb. 20. Jan. 1895. Gest. 1. März 1906." (Born Jan. 20, 1895. Died March 1, 1906.), and "Ruhe sanft!" (Rest gently!). A close up shot of the white, wire-mesh metal gate to the Lindley Cemetery. A weathered, rectangular sign is mounted on the top bar of the gate, framed by decorative, curved metalwork on the left and right.

The sign has the words "LINDLEY CEMETERY" spelled out in dark, perforated or drilled holes.

Beyond the fence, the ground is covered in dense, dry, golden-brown grass, and in the background, a few old graves or grave borders are visible, slightly out of focus. A wide, slightly hazy shot of the Lindley Cemetery, situated on a vast, flat plain under a pale blue sky with scattered clouds.

The foreground is dominated by a field of long, dry, golden-yellow grass and reddish-brown dirt. A rustic fence line, consisting of old wooden posts and wire, runs horizontally across the middle ground.

Beyond the fence, a number of light colored, traditional-style headstones are visible, interspersed with several small, dark-leaved trees. The graves stretch out toward the horizon, conveying a sense of isolation and vastness.

A close up photograph of two prominent, weathered marble gravestones in a cemetery.

The foreground headstone, leaning slightly, is a rounded top marker dedicated to "Mary Rebecca" (died December 31, 1891) and "John" (died September 23, 1902), stating he was "A Colonist of 51 Years."

The stone is etched with a floral/wreath design near the top. Behind it, a taller, Gothic-arched white marble headstone is partially visible.

The stones sit on gravel beds surrounded by a low railing, with a white structure and tall, dark trees in the background, out of focus.

A focused, close up photograph of a small, white marble statuette of a weeping angel resting on a low pedestal in the Kingston on Murray Cemetery.

The sculpture shows the kneeling angel with its head bowed in sorrow, partially obscured by its wings and the base of a simple white Latin cross that rises directly above it.

The white statue is sharply focused against a soft, dark, and blurred background of dry foliage and eucalyptus branches, creating a solemn, contemplative mood.

A close up photograph of a historically significant, simple grave marker at the Kingston on Murray Cemetery.

A small white stone plaque, leaning slightly, is clearly readable and marks the grave of Franz Edwin Obke, noting he was "ACCIDENTALLY KILLED 1908."

The grave is outlined by a rough, reddish-brown brick border, and in the center rests an old, cloudy glass jar holding a withered flower, signifying a recent or ongoing tribute.

The surrounding ground is sparse and dirt-covered, emphasizing the isolated, historic nature of the resting place. Signed Kev Peirce.

A close up, black and white photograph of a dark granite headstone in Rowland Flat Cemetery.

The tombstone, belonging to Roy Marsson Schulz and Barbara Edith, is clearly readable and features a small cutout of a Christian cross on its top left corner.

A bouquet of pale flowers rests at the base of the plaque, adding a soft contrast to the dark stone.

The headstone is sharply in focus, while the surrounding grassy, sunlit ground and a blurred background of foliage provide a simple, soft backdrop.

A striking black and white, focus stacked photograph capturing a central, highly ornate Celtic cross headstone monument in the Rowland Flat Cemetery.

The large cross, which has detailed knotwork, is flanked by two smaller stone crosses, and all three are dramatically framed against a dense, dark backdrop of trees.

The main monument rests on a dark, tiered foundation and is partially surrounded by a low fence or railing. The foreground, which is intentionally blurred, consists of grass and the tops of other grave markers, drawing the viewer's eye to the towering central memorial.

The high contrast enhances the solemn, historic mood of the scene. Signed Kev Peirce.

A small, delicate clear glass angel figurine stands on a tombstone.

The base of the figurine sits on a small, round, light-coloured disc, possibly wax or a shallow plate, reflecting the angel's shape.

The angel is centered on a polished dark gray or black granite surface with a blurred inscription below it, which appears to read "LOVING MEMORY".

The background is softly blurred, showing a mix of warm brown and grey textures. The bottom left corner of the image is signed Kev Peirce.

Day 5 of #31daysofgraves - bird. A throwback to 2019 when I accidentally took a 3-second video instead of a photo of this robin perched on the beautiful Edwardian headstone belonging to Eliza and John Greensmith. (I had to post a screenshot because the video wouldn’t upload 🤷‍♀️)
A robin perched on top of a headstone in Crosshill Cemetery, Codnor. The stone stands in a large area of grass with leaves scattered around it. A closer view of the same headstone. It is decorated with relief carvings of flowers and ivy, and had the following inscription:

aged 64 years
Also of

Day5: Bird

A bit literal I know; but I love corvids so much, and they are ever present in cemeteries. Superstitions have not always been kind to them but I like to think people look fonder at them now.

Brompton Cemetery, London.

#31daysofgraves
A stone cross in Brompton cemetery with gravestones of various shapes and sizes scattered across the grounds. Autumn leaves are scattered across the grass, and the trees behind the graves are heavy with green and golden foliage.

Victorian cemetery folklore often cast crows as guardians of the dead. It was said that if a crow perched on a grave, it was keeping watch over the spirit resting below, ensuring no evil forces disturbed their peace. However, if the bird cawed three times before flying away, it could also be a warning that another death was near.
