All of these things are true:
1. Alan Dye should never have had the role he did at Apple
2. Dye damaged Apple's software for years (and for years to come)
3. Tim Cook should have removed him long ago
4. It's a huge win for Apple's users that he left
5. Meta has such poor taste that they wanted him

Our older son turned 13 today, so we are now the parents of a teenager. We feel too young to have a kid this old, but as we barrel through our mid-40s, I think it's probably time to stop thinking that way. The time dilation effect of watching children grow continues to increase.

People bombarding me with "why do you care if Liquid Glass sucks or doesn't!" seem to forget or not realize it is LITERALLY MY JOB TO CARE. It is my business. I have made my living for the past 16 years building apps for people and clients on these platforms. I am also a user of these platforms.

Think about how many collective millions of dollars in time and effort have been spent by developers and designers to try to adopt Liquid Glass in the past year, only to have Apple start to walk it back on the very first minor release since launch. This is an admission, and embarrassing.

Just a quick note that while work is on-going to bring Breathable into the world of OSes 26, I've just released version 3.0.2, a compatibility update to ensure things continue to function properly in the meantime. breathable.app

Looking forward to the public release of OSes 26 next week when everyone who didn't use the beta opens Messages for the first time and sees all the dumbass backgrounds I set for our chats.

"People keep quitting the app."
"But... we make our money when they're using it."
"Yeah, but sometimes they quit it because they don't care about us making money, they just want to browse the web."
"Make it so quitting doesn't work. Make it require a different way to quit and tell them every time."

One thing I've been thinking about a lot since writing this is that we just finally got into a good spot with iOS UI/UX. It took nearly a decade for the drastic over-correction of iOS 7 to smooth out and be refined, to find middle ground again. And so of course Apple throws a grenade in the room.
Keep coming back to the same question: Why? Doesn't make things better, doesn't provide new insight or UX. It's just shiny chrome that makes it harder to read things on the screen. The ecosystem will spend millions of dollars to coerce their apps into this design system for nearly no gain for users.

Been told (rightly so) in the past that I tend to be pessimistic in my takes on UI changes, but I should preface this that my gut reaction to iOS 7 was horror—and it proved correct in the long-run. So, about Liquid Glass: It's a giant mess and quite bad. Looks okay in a show reel, but bad in use.

Physicality: the new age of UI
There’s a lot of rumors of a big impending UI redesign from Apple. Let’s imagine what’s (or what could be) next for the design of iPhones, Macs and iPads.

"Business expert" "money President" who "knows what he's doing" and can "make deals" really doing a bang-up job, especially if the goal is to ruin the economy faster than any President in history. This isn't even nearly the worst thing about this dipshit, but it's impressively stupid and disastrous.

My kids made some cards for me today to celebrate Karbon's 15-year anniversary. They're both sweet but also unhinged, which is pretty perfect for the occasion.

Today is Karbon's 15-year anniversary. Astounded, proud, honored and thankful. Can't believe I've gotten to run this little amazing company for most of my adult life. There have been challenging times, but it's still a dream to show up to work every day and build stuff with this team.

One of my favorite shared human experiences is when someone thinks they might have something in their nose, so they scratch it, then the person they're talking to thinks it might be a gentle signal THEY have something in their nose, so they scratch it, and it repeats for the entire conversation.

@gruber.foo Until your most recent post, I had never seen Imran Chaudhri’s “personal website”, which might be, as a single source, the greatest visible example of “why software patents are terrible” in history. Holy shit.

14 years ago today I clumsily convinced my now-wife to marry me by giving her an early Valentine's Day gift of an engagement ring while uttering "let's make this a long-term arrangement" instead of asking, you know, "will you marry me?" I am a doofus and lucky she went through with it.

Apple is featuring Breathable in several spots in the Mac App Store ("Best New Apps and Updates" and "Try These Mac Favorites"). Thanks for all the support and reshares and kind messages, everyone! Free or not, I've never had an app hit #1 in its category on the Mac App Store before. 🤯

Breathable will also be available in the EU again shortly. I removed it from sale there over the summer because of the terrible trader self-doxxing rules Apple was forced to implement, but now that it's free I can bring it back. Should propagate within a few hours.
