After years of being unable to remember the name of a weird & unsettling movie that I saw way too young, I finally cracked the mystery. It was ALTERED STATES. Though it is dated and pretentious in places, its visions of hell struck me as strongly this week as they did when I was a baffled teenager!

I wrote four blogs for We Are The Mutants, and this essay on Ghidorah is my favourite of them: "the Showa Ghidorah movies are a rich engagement with world-historical themes of Cold War antagonism, first contact, and imperial manipulation." wearethemutants.com/2021/10/06/t...

Another essay about colour, aesthetics, politics: The Blackness of the Beast: Godzilla in the Heart of Darkness. "The contemporary incarnation of Godzilla is an embodiment of the natural rightness of violently enforced hierarchy." sftpinstitu.us.es/revistas/est...

For anybody who enjoyed my recent @kaijuunited.bsky.social piece, a quick thread of some of my other Godzilla writing! First up: The Colour of Monstrosity, an essay about the MV's use of colour! "Godzilla Vs Kong needs you to know that it likes to party." popmec.hypotheses.org/5186 1/

NEW LONG READ on Kaiju United! (@kaijuunited.bsky.social). "God-killing and the Gag Order: Revision, Rearmament, and Takashi Yamazaki’s ‘Minus One’ Novelization" looks at the politics of G-1 thru a close reading of the newly-translated novelization. Get reading, gang!

Kaiju United thumbnail for my article, featuring characters from the movie reacting dramatically to Godzilla. Noriko, a dark-haired young Japanese woman, walking dazedly through a crowd fleeing Godzilla. Caption, from the Minus One novelization: "Surrounded by all of this chaos, she couldn’t help but be reminded of that horrible night she lost her family in the firebombing. In her current state, she was too dazed and weak to even tell whether it was Godzilla or an air raid these people were fleeing from." Screenshot of a journalistic article. Image: a Japanese tank. Caption: "Japan re-emerges as an Asia-Pacific military power. By 2027 Japan plans to take 'primary responisbility' for national defence against overseas invasions and is seeking to expand its stand-off strike capabilities." GMK Godzilla looms menacingly against a blue sky. Caption: "One nagging question kaiju fans have is why giant monsters keep attacking Japan. In GMK, I plan to suggest it’s because Japanese have forgotten the sins of their fathers and that affluence and luxury have made them complacent. Godzilla doesn’t like this. He’s angry at the Japanese and wants to smash them! Unfortunately, as much as I’d like, I can’t come out and say this directly. There are zealots here who will make a stink if they believe I’m bashing the nation. I’ll have to say these things in a roundabout way. Shusuke kaneko, director of GMK, speaking in 'Behind the Kaiju Curtain'."
